Udaipur, Aug 28, 2025: India recently clinched the fifth test against England after a draw in the previous test to level the final result 2-2 in what many cricket fans have described as one of the best international Test series since the Ashes back in 2005.
Despite the heroics of injured England player Chris Woakes, India won the dramatic final Test at The Oval, which ran from July 31 to August 4, by just 6 runs.
Let’s dive straight in to discover exactly what happened over the course of this series to find out whether the recent England-India Series draw was truly an all-time great Test series.
2025 India vs England Test series results
In the first of five Test matches, England won by five wickets with 84 balls left. The score finished India 471 & 364 against England’s 465 & 373/5 (target 371).
In the second Test, India won by 336 runs, when the match finished 587 & 427/6d India, and 407 & 271 (target 608) England. In the third Test, England won by just 22 runs, when the match finished 387 & 192 England, and 387 & 170 (target 193) India.
In the fourth Test, the match finished in a draw with the final scores at 358 & 425/4 (India) – 669 (England). With the series now tied at 2-2, and just one match to play, India ended up winning by just six runs when Mohammed Siraj bowled Gus Atkinson to spoil England’s dreams of winning this year.
Going into the final Test of the series, England were the slight odds-on favourite to win. For example, many of today’s most trusted online sportsbooks, such as the renowned 10CRIC official betting site of India, had England priced at 1.77 in the decimal odds format to win outright, and they had India priced at 2.00.
In other words, before the match got underway, England had a 56.50% chance (implied probability rate) of winning the match compared to India’s 50.00% chance (also known as EVENS), but it just wasn’t to be for England.
Highlights and memorable moments
Here is a quick look back at some of the main highlights from one of cricket’s best Test series in recent years.
One thing that many cricket fans have already agreed upon, despite not winning, is that England’s 2-2 Test series draw against Indian in early August 2025 is one of the most entertaining performances that England has put on since their fabled Ashes victory almost exactly two decades ago.
The game was played over the full 25 days, and it was a poignant end for Chris Woakes in a huge show of bravery, who dislocated his left shoulder on the first day and was seen in obvious pain each time he ran with Atkinson.
Woakes, who became only the fifth player in Test cricket to bat one-handed, and partner Atkinson, took their team to within six runs of the second-highest successful run-chase in England’s Test history.
Many people have also said that it could well have been Woakes’ last ever Test match for England, and he will almost certainly miss this year’s Ashes in November.
There were several other serious injuries, too. Shoaib Bashir played with a broken finger but helped bowl England to victory at Lord’s, and India’s Rishabh Pant batted on a broken foot at Old Trafford. The number of serious injuries that occurred this time also reignited the debate over why cricket won’t allow full substitutes.
Who was the best bowler, top run scorer, and player of the series?
Although everyone expected Jasprit Bumrah to be the standout bowler of the series, it was, in fact, Mohammed Siraj who was India’s most important player. The conclusion to this year’s England-India Test series was dramatic, and one that will no doubt go down in British sporting folklore.
Here were the four key wicket-takers and top run scorers:
Joe Root scored the most runs for England (537)
Shubman Gill scored the most runs for India (754)
Josh Tongue took the most wickets for England (19)
Mohammed Siraj took the most wickets for India (23)
However, the player of the series was Harry Brook for England and Shubman Gill for India. The series will also be remembered for the most memorable hundred, and for Jofra Archer’s incredible comeback after a four-year absence.
There was also an emotional moment for cricket fans when Joe Root commemorated the late great Graham Thorpe by taking out one of the headbands that was made specifically for this match. Thorpe died exactly one year prior (August 4, 2024). He once said [in 2010] that Root would go on to do amazing things in cricket, and he was right.
Cricket fans also agree that despite ending in a stalemate, it was a fitting end to a series and that it was a positive thing for the sport. Some say that both teams provided the most emotional, intense, and dramatic finales ever between these two cricketing nations.
Upcoming fixtures not to miss
Let’s now take a quick look at a few upcoming fixtures for both the England and Indian national cricket teams. England’s next international feature is a One Day International (ODI) on September 2 against South Africa. The first of three matches is at the Headingley Cricket Ground.
ODI match 2/3 against South Africa is on September 4 at Lord’s Cricket Ground, and then match 3/3 against South Africa is on September 7 at the Utilita Bowl (The Ageas Bowl) stadium, aka Rose Bowl, which is home of Hampshire County Cricket Club.
India’s next international cricket match is in the group stage of the Asia Cup against Oman on September 19. They also then go on to play against the West Indies in the first of two test matches from October 2-6, and then match 2/2 is from October 10-14.
Final thoughts
Although the latest Test series between England and India will go down as an all-time classic, it’s not the first time these two teams have put on some epic displays. Some of the other most memorable matches between these two occurred in 1952, 1971, 1986, 1990, 2002, 2007, 2013, 2014, 2018, and 2022.
You can find highlights of these iconic cricket matches between England and India on several trusted video-sharing platforms such as YouTube. Don’t forget to check them out to see which one you think is as good as (or better than) the recent Test series in England in the summer of 2025.
