{"id":100218,"date":"2025-08-29T05:39:25","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T05:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/100218\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T05:39:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T05:39:25","slug":"jarrod-westlake-sentence-for-internet-damage-in-falmouth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/100218\/","title":{"rendered":"Jarrod Westlake sentence for internet damage in Falmouth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  After initially pleading not guilty to his offences, Jarrod Westlake returned to Truro Crown Court where he admitted cutting the internet cables, as well as burglary and thefts.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The prosecutor said that on April 5 this year, alarms went off notifying authorities of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.falmouthpacket.co.uk\/news\/25071451.damage-internet-cables-falmouth-will-cost-100-000\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">malicious damage to the internet network<\/a> in Falmouth.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said around 60 customers were affected, including high profile businesses such as Wetherspoons and Bet Fred.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Boots and Holland &amp; Barrett could also not access their systems, resulting in medical transactions being cancelled.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.falmouthpacket.co.uk\/news\/25099269.broadband-fully-restored-falmouth-cables-cut\/?ref=ial\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Teamwork restores Falmouth broadband after vandalism threatened Easter trade<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  CCTV showed Westlake cutting wires, and this was also witnessed by members of the public.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  One man saw the defendant cutting wires with garden secateurs, while a woman saw him outside the Wetherspoon pub on The Moor, and asked him if he should be doing that.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cHe said he worked for BT and offered her a job,\u201d said the prosecutor, who added that the woman \u201cfelt slightly threatened by that.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Open Reach said that the loss of internet affected a community hub supporting vulnerable residents, in addition to the medical issues experienced.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  There was \u00a324,000 of damage caused to the wires, with a further cost of \u00a335,000 for the emergency repair work, resulting in an overall loss of \u00a359,000.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Westlake, who represented himself in court, said: \u201cThere was never intent in my actions. I\u2019m sincerely sorry.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The 34-year-old explained that his medication was not appropriate at the time.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Westlake was also sentenced for burglary and theft, the first of which took place March 2 this year, at Tesco Falmouth.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He asked for two packets of cigarettes, but when given them he simply walked out the shop without paying.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Then on March 15, also at Tesco Falmouth, he picked up a bottle of vodka in the store and drank from it. \u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He subsequently wandered in to a restricted area for staff and contractors, found some cider and drank from that too.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Judge Simon Carr said a psychiatric report showed Westlake suffered from psychosis,\u00a0ADHD, anxiety and depression.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cClearly you were very ill indeed when you committed these offences,\u201d he told Westlake, before adding: \u201cHowever, these were serious offences.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIn the crime against BT, you cut the phone line of a huge portion of [the town], putting people at risk and causing significant damage.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said Westlake had already spend a \u201csignificant period of time in custody on remand,\u201d and his sentence would allow the defendant to get the support the probation service was offering.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Judge Carr sentenced Westlake to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, for the damage to the internet cables, and a further four months in prison, suspended for two years, for the burglary.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Westlake must complete 50 days of rehabilitation activities in the next year, to address his issues. \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"After initially pleading not guilty to his offences, Jarrod Westlake returned to Truro Crown Court where he admitted&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":100219,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[1638,86,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-100218","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-internet","8":"tag-internet","9":"tag-technology","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/100218","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=100218"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/100218\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/100219"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=100218"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=100218"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=100218"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
