{"id":101325,"date":"2025-08-29T17:34:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T17:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/101325\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T17:34:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T17:34:09","slug":"wall-street-panics-as-key-inflation-gauge-suggests-tariffs-will-wreak-havoc-on-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/101325\/","title":{"rendered":"Wall Street panics as key inflation gauge suggests tariffs will wreak havoc on prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-668\/alice-wright.html\" class=\"author\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ALICE WRIGHT, US CONSUMER REPORTER<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  09:58 EDT, 29 August 2025   |  Updated:  11:32 EDT, 29 August 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Core <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisismoney.co.uk\/money\/bills\/article-12412155\/What-inflation-falling-means-you.html\" id=\"mol-ad9ff480-84df-11f0-9180-11be79fe555c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">inflation<\/a> rose to 2.9 percent last month, sending Wall Street into a spiral.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index showed prices, excluding volatile food and energy costs, were 2.9 percent higher in July compared to the same time last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Analysts and economists have made repeated warnings that Trump&#8217;s tariffs on foreign imports will drive up the prices of consumer goods for ordinary Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Stocks turned red in morning trading over concerns the figures show tariffs continuing to bite consumers spending power.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Nasdaq dropped 1.1 percent and the S&amp;P 500 dipped 0.8 percent on Friday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Although it is only a 0.1 percent increase from June, the new figures represent the highest annual rate since February,\u00a0according to a Commerce Department report.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Federal Reserve, which sets benchmark <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thisismoney.co.uk\/money\/mortgageshome\/article-11885727\/When-rates-start-fall-Base-rate-forecasts.html\" id=\"mol-8638c1e0-84e1-11f0-9180-11be79fe555c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interest rates<\/a>, prefers the PCE index as a long term indicator of inflation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The latests figures &#8211; Ellen Zentner, chief economic strategist at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management told CNBC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Today&#8217;s in-line PCE Price Index will keep the focus on the jobs market.
