That is the question facing American workers looking to switch jobs \u2014 especially those plugging away at jobs they don\u2019t like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">That\u2019s because statistics show that, since February, an uncommon trend has taken hold in the U.S. workforce: the salaries of those who stay in their current positions are outpacing the salaries of those who leave to find something new.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/22\/wage-growth-2025-job-switcher-job-stayer.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:CNBC notes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">CNBC notes<\/a> that such a trend usually \u201conly happened in periods around the Great Recession and the dot-com bust in the early 2000s.\u201d Still, \u201cjob stayers\u201d enjoyed 4.1% wage growth last month, while \u201cjob switchers\u201d saw 4%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">While it\u2019s not a big gap, the trend represents a massive shift in wage dynamics from recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Global data report platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/31032\/median-year-over-year-change-in-annual-pay-in-the-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Statista cites;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Statista cites<\/a> research showing that as recently as 2022, \u201cthe median year-over-year increase in annual pay for job switchers was above 15%.\u201d For those who stayed in their jobs, they received increases of only about half as much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Back then, job openings were plentiful and employers were paying a premium \u2014 a stark contrast to today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The current state of the dismal job market is affecting both job stayers and switchers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Those looking to get out encounter \u201cfewer opportunities to switch jobs and to realize wage gains\u201d labor economist Bill Congdon told Money.com.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">To that end, Zip Recruiter chief economist Julia Pollak explained to <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/with-labor-market-on-ice-job-hopping-has-lost-its-luster-130041911.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Yahoo Finance;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yahoo Finance<\/a> that \u201cEmployers are opportunistically able to pick up great talents on the cheap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2025\/07\/02\/why-fewer-people-quitting-their-jobs-in-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Marketplace adds;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Marketplace adds<\/a> that, \u201cOngoing uncertainty around tariff policy is also contributing \u2026 Businesses are reluctant to hire, and workers are cautious about making job changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">All of which explains why the rate of quits in the labor market keeps trending downward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">But what about those workers trapped in a holding pattern where they are unhappy in their current role but unwilling \u2014 or not financially able \u2014 to switch to a new job that pays less? The good news is that there are ways to take advantage of working a job you hate, they could set you up for an even more fulfilling career going forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">To start, there\u2019s nothing like a job you hate to motivate you to start working towards one that will bring you both joy and career opportunities. Take on new responsibilities related to a desired future role, enroll in professional enhancement courses online. Rather, many employees work longer hours (including evenings and weekends) or take on extra tasks to show initiative and gain favor that will, hopefully, lead to a raise and\/or promotion. If you\u2019re hoping to one day leave your company anyway, you\u2019ll feel more comfortable dialling back some of those duties and extra hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cPrioritize your well-being,\u201d Jay writes. \u201cA good balance contributes significantly to job satisfaction and overall happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Having a respectful conversation with your boss about your desire to better balance your personal and professional life could help reduce both your workload and your stress levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cAfter all,\u201d Jay adds, \u201cyou\u2019ve trained them to know that they can contact you after hours, you will need to train them to expect a response only during work hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">If nothing else, staying at a job that pays you better than one that you could jump to provides the opportunity to help pay down, or eliminate, any debt you\u2019re carrying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Of course, that is easier said than done. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debt.com\/news\/dont-let-debt-keep-chained-job-hate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Debt.com notes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Debt.com notes<\/a> that those who are unhappy at work \u201coften do things like overeat and drink or smoke more\u201d in addition to using retail therapy to help assuage their misery \u2014 all of which adds to what you owe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">If you can avoid, or at least limit, that type of behavior, many experts recommend using the time spent at the higher-paying job to work out a plan or schedule to pay down credit cards, student loans or other debts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">For those without significant debt, another option is to use the job to build what business coach <a href=\"https:\/\/itsadhdfriendly.com\/financial-freedom-hate-career\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqqf8ecs25gHlJnnZ-KRs-Puh5h_399s5VE3v9jbTjwXwZ_FQwb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Caren Magill calls;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Caren Magill calls<\/a> \u201cyour mini-freedom fund\u201d \u2014 savings that will sustain you in the event of job loss or if you quit because your physical or mental health (or both) just can\u2019t take it anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cI recommend a minimum of 6-12 months worth of living expenses,\u201d Magill wrote, \u201cnot invested in equities, but in a high-yield savings account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Having that financial goal \u2014 be it debt repayment or freedom fund \u2014 also helps set an unofficial timeline for you to be able to leave the job if you so choose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cYou can set a date as to when you would feel completely at peace with quitting your job, regardless of whether you have something else lined up,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-post-grad-survival-guide\/hate-my-job-should-i-quit-1f042eb4271f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Medium explained;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Medium explained<\/a>. \u201cBy setting this deadline \u2026 every day will feel more manageable because there is an end in sight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Stay in the know.
