Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay singer Chris Martin shocked the world when they announced they were ‘consciously uncoupling’ 10 years ago – the actress later said she could pinpoint one moment where she knew her marriage was over<\/p>\n

Oscar winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a> and Coldplay<\/a> frontman Chris Martin<\/a> famously revealed to the world they were \u2018consciously uncoupling\u2019<\/a> back in 2014 – introducing a unique new term to announce break-ups to the world<\/a> in the process.<\/p>\n

At the time the pair had been married for 10 years and and had welcomed two children, daughter Apple<\/a>, 21 and 19-year-old son Moses.<\/p>\n

And all appeared well for the showbiz golden couple from the outside – until Gwyneth dropped the bombshell statement on her Goop website that she and Chris<\/a> had called time on their marriage.<\/p>\n

In a joint statement, they said: \u201cIt is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much, we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways are closer than we have ever been.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asking for privacy from the public during \u201cthis difficult time,\u201d the former couple went on to say that they are \u201cparents, first and foremost\u201d and added, coining the now legendary break-up term: \u201cWe have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope to do that as we consciously uncouple and co-parent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since their split and official divorce in 2015, Gwyneth and Chris have been pictured holidaying together, spending birthdays and Christmases as a family and both have gone on to meet new partners. Gwyneth, 51, married film director Brad Falchuk, 53 \u2013 the man behind American Horror Story, Glee and Scream Queens – in 2018.<\/p>\n

Chris, 48, found love with 35-year-old Fifty Shades of Grey actress Dakota Johnson who he even introduced to Gwyneth. The Mirror exclusively revealed last year that Chris and Dakota had got engaged<\/a> after six years of dating.<\/p>\n

Sadly the pair split this year after eight years together, with reports confirming the breakup in early June. Sources close to the couple say the the separation was particularly painful for Dakota, who had grew to love Martin’s children. With Chris and Dakota are no more, it hasn’t stopped Gwyneth from continuing her friendship with the actress.<\/p>\n

While both Chris and Gwyneth have long moved on from their romance, Gwyneth has since reflected on the moment she knew her marriage was over. Describing an idyllic day with her then husband, the actress said she knew deep down she was not happy.<\/p>\n

In a personal essay for British Vogue<\/a>, she wrote: \u201cIt was my birthday, my 38th. My ex-husband [Chris] and I were tucked away in the Tuscan countryside, on a hill in a beautiful cottage with a view of the forest.<\/p>\n

\u201cFall was coming; the leaves were just loosening their grip on bright green. Inside, the cottage was perfectly appointed in the way you dream of for a birthday trip: cosy living room with a fireplace, kitchen table overflowing with spoils from the farm nearby \u2013 peaches, tomatoes on the vine, basil, eggs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t remember which day of the weekend it was or the time of day. But I knew \u2013 despite long walks and longer lie-ins, big glasses of Barolo and hands held \u2013 my marriage was over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Painfully, Gwyneth kept the dark realisation to herself. She went on to reveal: “It would be years before we said the words aloud\u201d, but that weekend \u201ca dam had cracked just enough to hear the unrelenting trickle of truth\u201d. This was a truth that would grow louder until it was \u201call I could hear\u201d.<\/p>\n

Saying she and Chris had \u201calways been friends\u201d who laughed at the same things, shared the same \u201cfunny bones humour\u201d and \u201cutter silliness\u201d, Gwyneth admitted: \u201cWe were close, though we never fully settled into being a couple. We just didn\u2019t quite fit together. There was always a bit of unease and unrest. But man, did we love our children.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Shallow Hal star said she and Chris did everything they could before calling it quits in a bid to keep the family together as a unit, saying the only divorces she had been around growing up had been \u201cbitter, acrimonious, unending\u201d, which she didn\u2019t want \u201cwith all my heart\u201d.<\/p>\n

But rather than the term being invented by Gwyneth and Chris \u2013 as first thought \u2013 \u2018conscious uncoupling\u2019 was actually suggested by their therapist and something they tested out privately for a whole year before announcing their separation to the public.<\/p>\n

Explaining the logic behind it, Gwyneth continued: \u201cWas there a world<\/a> where we could break up and not lose everything? Could we be a family, even though we were not a couple? We decided to try.\u201d Though their announcement caused a stir in the media, she said \u201cthe public\u2019s surprise gave way to a strange combination of mockery and anger I had never seen\u201d. But these days, instead of ridicule, people ask her how she managed to do it.<\/p>\n

She concluded: \u201cIt\u2019s very different for every couple but, for me, it meant, more than anything, being accountable for my own part in the dissolution of the relationship. There existed aspects of myself I was trying to heal through this relationship that I wasn\u2019t honest with myself about. I had been blind, guarded, invulnerable, intolerant.<\/p>\n

“I had to admit that and be brave enough to share it. I know my ex-husband was meant to be the father of my children, and I know my current husband is meant to be the person I grow very old with. Conscious uncoupling lets us recognise those two different loves can coexist and nourish each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris put his feelings into music, writing the Coldplay songs “Magic” and “Ink” from the album Ghost Stories about his breakup with Gwyneth.<\/p>\n

Track ‘Everglow’ from 2015’s A Head Full of Dreams is also heavily rumoured to be about Gwyenth – with the actress even appearing as a guest vocalist.<\/p>\n

Chris said Martin admitted the song is inspired by \u201ca loved one or a situation or a friend or a relationship that\u2019s finished…\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwyneth can be heard singing: \u201cSo how come things move on? How come cars don\u2019t slow.\u201d And later on: \u201cAnd we swore on that night, we\u2019d be friends \u2019til we die.\u201d<\/p>\n
