This strains the joints and could compress your organs. Better digestion<\/p>\n<p id=\"ee71cd22-6dd5-459e-afe1-1a093e6063b1\">\u201cWalking with a slouched posture can compress the stomach and intestines, slowing gut motility and worsening issues like bloating, reflux and constipation,\u201d says Richardson. He advises keeping your spine tall with your head stacked over your body, which also helps you avoid <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/computing\/augmented-reality\/i-review-laptops-for-a-living-and-ar-glasses-are-now-my-1-accessory-heres-why\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/computing\/augmented-reality\/i-review-laptops-for-a-living-and-ar-glasses-are-now-my-1-accessory-heres-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tech neck<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPosture walking gives the gut more room to function, helping food move smoothly through the digestive tract and supporting overall digestive health,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-2-improved-breathing\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>2. Improved breathing<\/p>\n<p id=\"e6cfbc5f-da4a-46a6-bb89-b2e7747697b0\">\u201cGood posture allows the diaphragm and lungs to expand fully, increasing oxygen intake,\u201d Richardson explains. \u201cBy avoiding that diagonal neck tilt\u2026you free up the airways, boosting stamina and reducing fatigue.\u201d Most importantly, you can breathe better using a more expansive breath.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-3-reduced-pain\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>3. Reduced pain<\/p>\n<p id=\"5db4fd5f-0c94-462a-9b30-af8db64b6953\">\u201cHunched shoulders and a forward head posture put extra stress on the spine. Walking tall with the head aligned above the shoulders encourages spinal alignment, reducing the risk of aches and chronic pain,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4-boosted-energy-and-mood\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>4. Boosted energy and mood<\/p>\n<p id=\"d4a9012b-aea0-4099-93d0-0f8eaad8094b\">Richardson reveals perhaps the most surprising benefit of walking with better posture, and it relates to your mood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25222091\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25222091\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Research<\/a> shows posture can affect hormone levels and mood. Walking upright with shoulders back can increase confidence, lower stress and improve overall mental well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5-more-efficient-movement\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>5. More efficient movement<\/p>\n<p id=\"a212a0be-6f5c-484f-8f68-4a5ed9bf45f2\">Turns out you can be more energy-efficient by aligning your body better, according to Richardson. \u201cAn aligned body moves more smoothly, wasting less energy. Proper posture engages the core and glutes, helping you burn calories more effectively while lowering injury risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I wouldn\u2019t bank on an<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/non-exercise-activity-thermogenesis-why-neat-could-help-you-burn-more-calories\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/non-exercise-activity-thermogenesis-why-neat-could-help-you-burn-more-calories\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> increase in calorie burn<\/a>. It\u2019s a number that\u2019s hard to quantify and subjective based on a person\u2019s physiology and a number of other factors, so I would focus more on walking efficiently and playing around with factors like cadence or terrain if you do want to increase intensity.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-why-improved-posture-matters\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Why improved posture matters<\/p>\n<p id=\"6b5c6c42-4477-4f2e-b658-6c3478862e00\">Many of us spend time hunched over tech and sitting at desk jobs, myself included. The result?
