{"id":105366,"date":"2025-08-31T18:37:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T18:37:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/105366\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T18:37:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T18:37:06","slug":"jonas-vingegaard-powers-to-vuelta-stage-nine-win-with-valdezcaray-climb-vuelta-a-espana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/105366\/","title":{"rendered":"Jonas Vingegaard powers to Vuelta stage nine win with Valdezcaray climb | Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The twice Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard won stage nine of the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a with a solo attack on the climactic climb to Valdezcaray on Sunday, shaving nearly two minutes off the gap to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2025\/aug\/30\/vuelta-a-espana-philipsen-sprints-to-second-stage-win-as-tren-stays-in-red\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">overall leader Torstein Tr\u00e6en<\/a>, who is ahead by 37 seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Visma-Lease a Bike\u2019s Vingegaard dominated the 13.2km category one climb at the end of the 195.5km ride from Alfaro to the Valdezcaray ski resort and although Tom Pidcock and Jo\u00e3o Almeida tried to chase, they finished 24sec off the pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Vingegaard, who had a mechanical issue during the stage but caught up with the peloton again with 75km to go, said he knew it was his day when he put his team at the front for the final climb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI felt great today, and I felt amazing on the final climb. I asked them to accelerate, and they did a great job. It was fantastic teamwork, and I\u2019m very happy that I was able to finish it off,\u201d the 28-year-old Dane said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Norwegian Tr\u00e6en, who had fallen behind the peloton during the climb, launched a late attack in the final 3km to finish 1min 46sec behind Vingegaard, retaining the red jersey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During the stage there were several failed attempts to break away early on until Michel Hessmann, Liam Slock, Michal Kwiatkowski, Archie Ryan and Kevin Vermaerke formed a leading group, building a 2min gap around the 70km mark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The riders faced heavy rain about 120km into the stage, and the peloton maintained the gap to the leaders before rapidly closing distance with the breakaway five in the final 30km.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lidl-Trek riders Carlos Verona and Andrea Bagioli attempted to lead out their teammate Giulio Ciccone early on the climb, but Vingegaard stayed on their heels before launching an attack with 11km to go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Italy\u2019s Ciccone could not keep up the chase, while Briton Pidcock (Q36.5) and Portugal\u2019s Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) charged ahead to finish on the podium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Almeida sits third in the general classification, 1min 15sec behind Tr\u00e6en. Pidcock is fourth, 20sec behind Almeida. Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) remained at the top of the points classification, retaining the green jersey.
