\n The Edenfield Centre in Prestwich<\/a>, which is run by Greater Manchester<\/a> Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH), is set to be named the ‘Riverside Centre’.\n<\/p>\n

\n Bosses say that the name change follows feedback from inpatients, carers and staff at the centre and recognises their \u201ccommitment to building better services\u201d.\n<\/p>\n

\n An undercover probe by the BBC in 2022 alleged shocking levels of abuse at the Prestwich site, with footage aired showing staff mocking, slapping and pinching patients, using inappropriate restraint – according to experts – and faking paperwork intended to ensure patient safety.\n<\/p>\n

\n The BBC\u2019s undercover reporter spent three months as a healthcare support worker at The Edenfield Centre\u2019s medium secure unit as part of its investigative TV\u00a0series, Panorama, following whistle-blower allegations of poor staff behaviour and patient safety at the hospital<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\n Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH)\u00a0told Panorama\u00a0it was taking the allegations \u201cvery seriously\u201d and had taken \u201cimmediate actions to protect patient safety\u201d.\n<\/p>\n

\n A number of\u00a0staff members were sacked and\u00a0suspended<\/a>, and the trust worked closely with Greater Manchester Police, the independent healthcare regulator the Care Quality Commission and NHS England.\n<\/p>\n

\n Further concerns were raised\u00a0following a Care Quality Commission (CQC)<\/a> inspection last year, with a\u00a0report finding concerns over staff being expected to \u201ccarry out observations for several hours without a break\u201d and not feeling \u201cable to speak up about concerns\u201d. \u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n Inspectors noted that blind spots on several wards weren\u2019t adequately addressed and that some ligature risk assessments were undated.\n<\/p>\n

\n The regulator served a warning notice on GMMH last year for a series of failures including a lack of effective governance systems, ligature risks and fire safety concerns, medicines not being managed safely, ward security systems not consistently keeping people safe, infection prevention and control risks and staff not being up to date with mandatory training<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\n It is\u00a0hoped\u00a0that the name change will \u201cmark a significant milestone in the recovery journey\u201d for the medium secure adult forensic mental health inpatient unit.\n<\/p>\n
