Miss Talento Swept Wide Late to Take Control \/ JUAN I. BOZZELLO<\/p>\n

The saying came to life in the\u00a0Handicap Mouchette (1800m, heavy dirt), the first of two feature races on Monday at\u00a0Hip\u00f3dromo Argentino de Palermo.<\/p>\n

Coming from the back,\u00a0Miss Talento (57 kg)\u00a0capitalized on her current form and the battles ahead to claim the top prize, leaving\u00a0Emma Novela (Emmanuel, 55 kg)\u00a0and topweight and favorite\u00a0Poker Mommy (Daddy Long Legs, 60 kg)empty-handed after they had dueled head-to-head for much of the stretch.<\/p>\n

In a race that offered twists and turns from start to finish, the patience of jockey\u00a0Kevin Banegas\u00a0paid off handsomely. Fortune also played a part:\u00a0Eduardo Ortega Pav\u00f3n, aboard Poker Mommy, lost his whip at the start\u2014an almost fatal setback for a large, heavy-moving filly. This forced the Paraguayan to make unusual maneuvers with the reins to urge her along.<\/p>\n

At the wire, Miss Talento prevailed by\u00a0\u00be of a length\u00a0over Emma Novela, with the gray filly in third, just a neck back. All this came on a very slippery track, where\u00a0Costa Dark (In the Dark, 59 kg), returning from a break, failed to respond and could manage only sixth,\u00a06\u00bc lengths\u00a0behind.<\/p>\n

The pace was set by Costa Dark, closely tracked by Poker Mommy, with Emma Novela patiently positioned and Miss Talento well off the pace. In the stretch, the leader quickly gave way, and it seemed the two closers would decide the outcome.<\/p>\n

But from the back, Banegas launched the\u00a0Stud Don Yayo\u00a0filly with a perfectly timed rally, taking control\u00a020 meters from the wire\u00a0in\u00a01:53.47, reflecting the challenging state of the track.<\/p>\n

Bred by\u00a0Mar\u00eda I.
