Imane Khelif has the right to appeal against World Boxing\u2019s decision barring her from events unless she undergoes genetic sex testing but the Algerian has not entered the world championships in Liverpool, the World Boxing<\/a> president, Boris van der Vorst, has said.<\/p>\n

World Boxing, which will oversee boxing in the 2028 Olympics, introduced mandatory sex testing for all boxers in its competitions in May, less than a year after Khelif and Taiwan\u2019s Lin Yu-ting won gold in Paris amid a gender-eligibility row<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Khelif appealed to the court of arbitration for sport \u2013 sport\u2019s highest court \u2013 seeking to overturn World Boxing\u2019s ruling<\/a> asking boxers to undertake a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) genetic test. \u201cShe has the right to do this [appeal],\u201d Van der Vorst said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us, it\u2019s important to stress that we introduced mandatory testing in order to have safe and competitive competitions, fair competitions. We announced it in May. And for us, everyone is equal. Every woman here has to submit several documents, including the sex testing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The World Boxing Championships get under way in Liverpool on Thursday and when asked if Khelif would have failed the test, Van der Vorst said: \u201cIt\u2019s too early to draw conclusions. She has simply not entered on behalf of her own federation here in Liverpool.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Algerian Boxing Federation has not responded to a request for comment<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, World Boxing confirmed Taiwan\u2019s Lin would not be competing at the world championships either. \u201cI know that she also is not part of the entry list of the National Federation,\u201d Van der Vorst added.<\/p>\n

The Dutchman had apologised in June when World Boxing specifically named Khelif in their announcement on mandatory sex testing. However, he defended the decision for such tests to ensure they had \u201csafe and fair competitions\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are speaking not only about amateur boxing, but Olympic boxing. For us, that\u2019s our brand, because that\u2019s the \u2018why\u2019 of World Boxing. We established World Boxing in order to save the Olympic dream,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoxing is a combat sport and it is important to have safe and fair competitions. So, for us, it\u2019s really crucial to introduce this kind of testing.
