\n\tEllen DeGeneres<\/a> confirmed she and her wife, former actress Portia de Rossi, decided to permanently relocate to the U.K.<\/a> following the re-election of president Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile in conversation with broadcaster Richard Bacon at Cheltenham\u2019s Everyman Theatre before kicking off her British tour, the former talk show host said she and de Rossi were initially looking to settle in the country part-time, per BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, \u2018He got in.\u2019 And we\u2019re like, \u2018We\u2019re staying here,’\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

\n\tDeGeneres continued of the decision, \u201cIt\u2019s clean. Everything here is just better \u2014 the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOf particular concern was the status of LGBTQ+ rights and same-sex marriage in the U.S., DeGeneres stated, citing Southern Baptists delegates\u2019 national meeting in June<\/a> where an overwhelming majority of the 10,000 church representatives present called to reverse the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s 10-year-old ruling legalizing gay marriage. Additionally, lawmakers in nine states have proposed measures that would undermine 2015\u2019s Obergefell v. Hodges<\/a>. (Notably, the U.K. also has its issues with queer rights, as a recent International Journal for Equity in Health article<\/a> addressed the rising transphobia among government, public and media officials.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,\u201d DeGeneres said. \u201cThey\u2019re trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it. Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we\u2019re going to get married here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe added later, \u201cI wish we were at a place where it was not scary for people to be who they are. I wish that we lived in a society where everybody could accept other people and their differences. So until we\u2019re there, I think there\u2019s a hard place to say we have huge progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere, DeGeneres commented on the controversy that in part led to the ending of her daytime series after 19 seasons<\/a> in 2022. A string of reports about a toxic work environment and sexual misconduct by top producers in 2020 led to an internal investigation by parent company Warner Bros.<\/a>, with\u00a0The Ellen DeGeneres Show\u00a0making a number of behind-the-scene changes<\/a>, including letting go of three longtime EPs and host DeGeneres apologizing to her staff, as well as to the audience. DeGeneres had most recently addressed the matter in her 2024 Netflix special<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNo matter what, any article that came up, it was like, \u2018She\u2019s mean\u2019, and it\u2019s like, how do I deal with this without sounding like a victim or \u2018poor me\u2019 or complaining? But I wanted to address it,\u201d she explained. \u201cIt\u2019s as simple as, I\u2019m a direct person, and I\u2019m very blunt, and I guess sometimes that means that \u2026 I\u2019m mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe added that it was \u201ckind of crazy\u201d that saying someone is mean \u201ccan be the worst thing that you say about a woman\u201d: \u201cHow dare us have any kind of mood, or you can\u2019t be anything other than nice and sweet and kind and submissive and complacent,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

\n\tDeGeneres concluded that it was \u201ccertainly an unpleasant way to end\u201d her show, though \u201cI don\u2019t think I can say anything that\u2019s ever going to get rid of that [reputation] or dispel it, which is hurtful to me. I hate it.
