\n Matthew Trainer, chief executive of\u00a0Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust (BHRUT), commented on its financial woes\u00a0in a recent newsletter.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n In the document, Mr Trainer said: “Our outgoings are running at around \u00a32-3 million a month more than we can afford, and this has an impact on our cash flow and on our ability to pay suppliers on time.”\n<\/p>\n

\n The letter discussed further the financial challenges the trust has faced this year following five days of industrial action that saw \u00a31m spent on staffing during the strike.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n We approached the trust, which runs Queen’s and King George Hospitals, to ask what is being done to address the issues.\n<\/p>\n

\n Mr Trainer said:\u00a0\u201cWe, like many NHS organisations, are facing huge challenges as we attempt to live within our means while also meeting rising demand – this year has seen several of the busiest months ever across our A&Es.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe\u2019re also being asked to deliver a savings plan on a bigger scale than ever before \u2013 double the \u00a330m we\u2019ve delivered in the past two financial years.\n<\/p>\n

\n “To help achieve this, we\u2019ve cut how much we spend on high cost agency workers, down from \u00a347m two years ago to an expected \u00a37m this year.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u201cDespite short-term cash issues meaning some invoices have been paid later than usual, 90pc\u00a0of what we owe has been paid on time.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
