In just a few kilometres the break will start ascending the day\u2019s first mountain, the category one Alto de la Mozqueta, which rises at 8.2% for 6.4km. That might pale in comparison to the Angliru, but is still steeper than most of what the riders have faced so far at this Vuelta.<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T13:05:24.263Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"5edd33c1-b6aa-4630-90f1-fedcfde84192\">The gap continues to grow, up to 3:35. The pace in the peloton is high, with Visma not holding back, but higher still in the break, which is well-organised with multiple riders taking committed turns.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-60km-to-go\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>60KM TO GO<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T13:04:29.116Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"b7f2b372-491d-4d23-9994-6f64401b06cc\">The weather out there is sunny, which means the riders should be spared the rain and mist that have affected past ascents of the Angliru.<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T13:03:02.341Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"23afe0b9-36e9-4f69-9bba-d0dbaff0ee4d\">Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe are keeping their GC men Jai Hindley and Giulio Pellizzari up towards the front of the peloton. The Brit has climbed better than ever in his career to date, peaking when he managed to even drop Jonas Vingegaard during the stage in the Basque Country two days ago. While the Portuguese rider has struggled to respond to the explosive accelerations from Vingegaard at this race, he might flourish more on a mountain like Angliru, where the ultra-steep gradients will neutralise the gains made from brief accelerations in favour of how well they climb for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T12:39:10.809Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"84f559cc-afd5-4acb-a988-6bff57a0a259\">This is a big day for Visma-Lease a Bike and Jonas Vingegaard. The Dane leads the general classification, but not by much of a margin, with both Jo\u00e3o Almeida and Tom Pidcock still within a minute of his time. You imagine their leader Jonas Vingegaard must fancy a stage win on the Angliru, to add to his growing Grand Tour collection.<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T11:38:10.773Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"945233c1-f085-43bf-b26b-b0cdc7ef7dee\">Today is all about the Angliru, one of the most famous climbs in cycling, and one that evokes fear and excitement in equal measure every time it features at the Vuelta. You can read an in-depth preview of the stage, and what it is that makes this mountain so special, here.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/races\/vuelta-a-espana-2025\/stage-13\/preview\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/races\/vuelta-a-espana-2025\/stage-13\/preview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a 2025 stage 13 preview &#8211; How hard will Jonas Vingegaard strike on the crunch ascent of the Angliru?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T11:30:24.388Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"37df9aa6-d314-42c3-86ab-d4ccaacc5a9c\">There are a lot of KOM points on offer today &#8211; 40 in total, with 10 at the top of the first two climbs, and 20 at the top of the Angliru. This could therefore be a great chance for Joel Nicolau to challenge for the jersey, given that he\u2019s made the break, and is 5th in the rankings already with 20 points, 26 behind leader Jay Vine.<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T11:27:45.435Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"595fc676-62f4-4847-a4ae-ec18a908c04e\">The gap between the break and the peloton remains about 2:45, with Visma-Lease a Bike leading the latter.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-140km-to-go\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>140KM TO GO<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T11:25:30.241Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"b2ecdf2a-f359-44e3-b75a-dd9150912342\">Pedersen might not have a clear run at the intermediate sprint points today. His main rival for the green jersey, Ethan Vernon, is also in the break &#8211; though doesn\u2019t have the climbing legs of Pedersen, so could well be dropped once the climbing starts.<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T11:21:45.232Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"ef7998d0-c463-4d85-8c89-4bd34503d1e3\">The indefatigable Mads Pedersen is, yet again, in the day\u2019s break. He has one category one mountain to negotiate later before the day\u2019s intermediate sprint, where he could extend his 61 point lead in the points classification. Oliveira dropped Hamilton earlier, who still remains in no-man&#8217;s land.<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T11:16:29.683Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"37763b09-fe0a-4140-83f0-84ed98814aba\">2:56 is the gap between the leaders and the peloton, on this long flat section leading to the foot of the first of the day&#8217;s three big climbs, which is still only a little less than 100km away.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-150km-to-go\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>150KM TO GO<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T11:14:40.492Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"8eadb313-9d9a-4c57-8192-f99e3bc9f16a\">After Tiberi, Jefferson Cepeda is one of the more acclaimed climbers in the break. The Ecuadorian was present in many of the breakaways at the Giro d\u2019Italia earlier this season, though didn\u2019t manage a stage win.<\/p>\n<p>2025-09-05T11:11:00.299Z<\/p>\n<p id=\"9ec9b8b7-b88f-49dc-96e4-99213320e985\">There aren\u2019t many riders in the break who have experience of having won Grand Tour stages in the past, but Bob Jungels is one such rider.
