{"id":116572,"date":"2025-09-05T15:08:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T15:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/116572\/"},"modified":"2025-09-05T15:08:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T15:08:17","slug":"canadian-economy-bled-66000-jobs-in-august-as-unemployment-rate-hit-its-highest-since-pandemic-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/116572\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian economy bled 66,000 jobs in August as unemployment rate hit its highest since &#8216;pandemic days&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Canada&#8217;s unemployment rate reached nearly its highest point since 2016 as the economy shed\u00a066,000 jobs in August, according to new data from Statistics Canada.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points in August\u00a0to 7.1 per cent, a level last seen in May 2016 if the COVID-19 years of\u00a02020 and 2021 were excluded, the data agency said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The unemployment rate,\u00a0or the number of people unemployed out of\u00a0the total population, has been rising consistently this year, up from a 6.6 per cent rate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/labour-force-survey-january-2025-1.7453195\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in January<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The figures are more dire than some economists had predicted \u2014 a Reuters poll ahead of the release predicted a gain of 10,000 jobs and the unemployment rate to rise to 7 per cent.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Of the jobs lost, Statistics Canada says most \u2014 some 60,000 \u2014 were part-time ones, while there was little change in the number of full-time jobs.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Most of the jobs lost were also among workers\u00a0between 25 to 54 years old, with little change in youth employment, according to StatsCan.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A critical metric, called the\u00a0participation rate, that shows how many people were economically\u00a0active\u00a0\u2014 either in jobs or actively looking for them\u00a0\u2014 was at 65.1 per cent,\u00a0also at its lowest since the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Employment also fell across a number of industries, including some hit by tariffs.\u00a0In particular, the scientific and technical services sector lost 26,000 jobs, while transportation and warehousing dropped 23,000 and manufacturing bled 19,000.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Construction, on the other hand, made gains, adding 17,000 new roles.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This comes after the economy lost a total of 41,000 jobs last month.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">BMO chief economist Douglas Porter\u00a0says that, plainly, today&#8217;s news is not good.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Suffice it to say that this was worse than expected, and arguably the weakest jobs report since the pandemic days,&#8221; Porter said in a note.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He says the losses in tariff-exposed sectors show the impact of the trade war.
