The rollout is imminent, but just how safe is it? Recently, The Express <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/2099857\/nhs-robotic-surgery-lung-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">watched\u00a0<\/a>a pioneering lung cancer operation at Guy\u2019s Hospital, during which the patient was expected to be \u201cawake within half an hour, sitting up in a chair and having a cup of tea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">The <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/2066907\/nhs-robot-surgery-operations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">benefits<\/a> seem clear and undeniable. But there have been a number of tragedies in the past decade alone. Coroner Karen Dilks had said his tragic death had come as a \u201cdirect consequence of the operation and its complications\u201d and \u201cin part, because the operation was undertaken with robotic assistance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With a projected annual growth rate of 70,000 to half a million over the next decade, the expansion shows no signs of slowing down. NHS National Medical Director Professor Meghana Pandit has said this technology will help build a health service \u201cfit for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slashed recovery times, reduced waiting lists, and reduced pain are just a few of the benefits for patients and the NHS at large. But in addition to complications arising in the technology itself, there is potential for error in smoothly operating it.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Surana emphasises, \u201cit\u2019s important to put patient safety as well as efficiency at the heart of developing new technologies and services,\u201d and that \u201cresearch shows the best use of these tools is on precision-focused repetitive tasks, and surgical planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"withoutCaption\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/britains-prince-william-duke-of-cambridge-looks-through-a-dual-console-of-the-da-vinci-robot-6406281.jpeg\" class=\"zoomEnabled\" data-img=\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/1\/1200x712\/secondary\/britains-prince-william-duke-of-cambridge-looks-through-a-dual-console-of-the-da-vinci-robot-6406281.jpg?r=1757005447027\" alt=\"BRITAIN-ROYALS\" title=\"BRITAIN-ROYALS\" width=\"590\" height=\"393\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>During robotic-assisted surgery surgeons view the patient&#8217;s anatomy through a 3D display (Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ashley McKimm, also a joint co-editor-in-chief at BMJ Innovations, echoes the emphasis on safety.<\/p>\n<p>While confirming that \u201cwe\u2019re seeing an unprecedented acceleration in surgical technology\u201d, he emphasises that \u201cadvances need to be matched by rigorous training, oversight, and evaluation to ensure patient safety keeps pace with innovation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dr McKimm acknowledges that \u201cthe benefits can be significant &#8211; greater precision, quicker recovery, fewer complications\u201d and that robotic-assisted surgery is indeed \u201ctransforming how complex procedures like lung cancer surgery are performed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"withoutCaption\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/bariatric-surgery-for-an-overweight-patient-performed-using-the-da-vinci-medical-robot-at-the-640628.jpeg\" class=\"zoomEnabled\" data-img=\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/1\/1200x712\/secondary\/bariatric-surgery-for-an-overweight-patient-performed-using-the-da-vinci-medical-robot-at-the-6406287.jpg?r=1757005447037\" alt=\"Surgery Performed Using The Da Vinci Medical Robot\" title=\"Surgery Performed Using The Da Vinci Medical Robot\" width=\"590\" height=\"399\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The da Vinci Xi system\u2019s dual controls allow surgeons to take control when needed. (Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, surgeons are also promised massively beneficial advantages when it comes to manual tasks. Your surgeon will explain these beforehand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At University Hospital Coventry, where robotic surgery was recently introduced for some patients, an NHS Trust leaflet from UHCW outlines the risks for those undergoing surgery in the head and neck area.<\/p>\n<p>The leaflet emphasises the major advantage of the robotic-assisted procedure: the telescope, which allows a much clearer view of the back of the tongue when tissue needs to be removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"withoutCaption\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/shanghai-china-media-staff-take-photos-as-surgeriis-single-port-endoscopic-surgical-robot-6406318.jp.jpeg\" class=\"zoomEnabled\" data-img=\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/1\/1200x712\/secondary\/shanghai-china-media-staff-take-photos-as-surgeriis-single-port-endoscopic-surgical-robot-6406318.jpg?r=1757005447078\" alt=\"Surgerii's Single-port Endoscopic Surgical Robot Demonstrates Its Skills In Shanghai\" title=\"Surgerii's Single-port Endoscopic Surgical Robot Demonstrates Its Skills In Shanghai\" width=\"590\" height=\"394\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Newer models can operate with multipe arms and surgeons can even feel how much pressure they apply (Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Some disadvantages are highlighted, including the surgery possibly being slower and the patient needing to be anesthetised for a longer period of time. This is because the robot takes time to set up and may be slower than conventional surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a similar informational leaflet from East Kent Hospitals University on transoral robotic-assisted surgery (TORS) for head and neck cancer patients states that \u201cyou do not have to agree to undergo TORS.\u201d Patients will be given time to think about their decision and to discuss this.<\/p>\n<p>The main complications associated with robotic-assisted head and neck surgery on the UHCW leaflet list complications of robotic-assisted surgery as bleeding, pain on swallowing, swelling, infection, and limited mouth opening.<\/p>\n<p>However, it cautions that \u201cthese risks apply to all surgical procedures around the jaws, not just robotic-assisted surgery\u201d.
