{"id":118812,"date":"2025-09-06T15:03:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T15:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/118812\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T15:03:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T15:03:11","slug":"trap-set-for-picnic-stealing-black-bear-in-burnaby-following-viral-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/118812\/","title":{"rendered":"Trap set for picnic-stealing black bear in Burnaby following viral video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Conservation officers say a picnic-stealing black bear can no longer safely co-exist with humans and will have to be destroyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The bear has been spotted multiple times in Burnaby Mountain Park, a conservation area in Metro Vancouver, adjacent to Simon Fraser University, according to\u00a0provincial conservation officer Kent Popjes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That\u00a0includes\u00a0three days in a row where it was reported &#8220;accessing picnic lunches,&#8221; followed by an incident on Aug. 31 that was captured on video, racking up millions of views across social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That footage was captured\u00a0by Upansa and Divyanshu Chaubisa\u00a0who filmed the bear walking toward\u00a0a large group of people sitting in the park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">WATCH | Black bear surprises picknickers:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In the video, several people can be heard yelling out words of warning, prompting the picnickers to scatter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We all were very scared,&#8221; Upansa said, noting that one couple seemed to be absorbed by their reading and didn&#8217;t notice until the bear was directly behind them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Once the area was cleared the bear started snacking on food that was left behind, sticking around for about five minutes before moving on, the Chaubisas said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While no one was harmed, Popjes said it\u00a0is clear the bear is no longer exhibiting safe behaviour around humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Basically that&#8217;s the kind of bear that&#8217;s completely lost its fear of humans and it will walk up and grab food, likely from your hand,&#8221;\u00a0he said.\u00a0&#8220;The public safety threshold was exceeded for a bear that we can tolerate in the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The park has remained\u00a0open, but food is now prohibited and a live trap has been set up with Popjes saying if the bear is caught it will have to be killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On Thursday, a bear was seen going into the trap but conservation officers were\u00a0not immediately\u00a0able to confirm if it was\u00a0the same bear that has been stealing food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Petition launched to save bear<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meanwhile, a Burnaby resident has started an online\u00a0petition calling on conservation officers and the B.C. government to remove the trap and leave the bear be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Those of us who\u00a0live, walk, and hike on\u00a0Burnaby\u00a0Mountain do not feel threatened by this\u00a0bear,&#8221; it reads. &#8220;We understand that black\u00a0bears\u00a0are shy, intelligent animals who are simply trying to survive in shrinking pockets of their natural habitat.
