{"id":119081,"date":"2025-09-06T17:55:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T17:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/119081\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T17:55:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T17:55:08","slug":"boxing-champ-billy-joe-saunders-sentenced-for-hare-coursing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/119081\/","title":{"rendered":"Boxing champ Billy Joe Saunders sentenced for hare coursing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The 36-year-old, who grew up in Hatfield, was fined and ordered to complete\u00a0community service when he was sentenced at\u00a0Lincoln Magistrates\u2019 Court on September 4.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It comes after sight dogs used for hunting were found in his\u00a0possession and videos of the crime in action were found on the the phones of Saunders and his three co-defendants, who have also been sentenced this week.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  On October 9 last year, police\u00a0received a call that the occupants of a silver Mercedes ML were hare coursing at Wellend Bank, near Market Deeping in Lincolnshire.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The vehicle was spotted by an officer as well as multiple members of the public, who called in reports that a vehicle matching the description was speeding, \u201cjust coming off the fens covered in mud\u201d, and filled with people who were \u201cacting suspiciously\u201d.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Six people were found inside the vehicle designed to carry five, two of which\u00a0were children aged 13 and 16.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A police spokesperson said that in the boot\u00a0were two light-coloured Greyhound\/lurcher-type dogs named George and Molly, and the car was covered in fresh mud up to its roof, indicating that it had recently been travelling off road.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Billy Joe Saunders.\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Billy Joe Saunders. (Image: Lincolnshire Police) Attempts had also been made to conceal the rear number plates with mud.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whtimes.co.uk\/news\/25445747.police-arrest-two-men-cctv-suggested-ran-town-centre\/?rel=cl_lsa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Police arrest two men after CCTV suggested they ran through town centre<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whtimes.co.uk\/news\/25445752.topshop-return-welwyn-garden-city-four-years-away\/?rel=cl_lsa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Topshop to return to Welwyn Garden City after four years away<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The boxer, now of Holwell Lane in Essendon, was given a depravation order for the two dogs, the\u00a0the silver Mercedes car, all hare coursing paraphernalia, a locking knife and mobile phone.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He must also pay\u00a0\u00a33375 compensation for kennel and welfare fees, \u00a385 in costs to the Crown Prosecution Service and a \u00a3114 victim surcharge.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Saunders must complete 60 hours of unpaid work and has been banned from keeping dogs for five years. He also received a five-year Criminal Behaviour\u00a0Order.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Lincolnshire Police have released footage of Saunders&#8217; arrest, which can be viewed on their X page.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n    Another \u2018knockout\u2019 result at court<\/p>\n<p>The men, Billy Joe Saunders (36), Maurice John Smith (36), Noah Stanley (54) and Noah Stanley (26) were convicted after dogs used for hunting were found in their possession and videos of the crime were found on their phones<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NFUtweets?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@NFUtweets<\/a><\/p>\n<p>1\/2 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tvrOZuUEGl\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/tvrOZuUEGl<\/a>\n  <\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lincolnshire Police Rural Crime Action Team (RCAT) (@LincsRuralCrime) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LincsRuralCrime\/status\/1963935156437471339?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">September 5, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n  PC Chris Windsor-Beck, from the Lincolnshire Police rural crime action team (RCAT), said: \u201cThey were all travelling from the south of the country and were unable to provide any good reason why they were in Lincolnshire at that time of the day with sight hounds used for hunting, catapults and a vehicle used in off-road driving.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He added: \u201cWe had the hard evidence that they were hare coursing, so there was nothing to do but accept guilt.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Hare coursers are drawn to Lincolnshire because of its flat, open terrain, and often, the activity involves gambling, and there can be a range of other criminal activities, including theft, criminal damage, violence and intimidation \u2013 but our team is fighting back with every report. They are not welcome here, or anywhere else in the county.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Police have summarised the four men&#8217;s sentences as follows:\n<\/p>\n<p>Billy Saunders aged 36, Holwell Lane, Essendon, Hatfield, Noah Stanley, aged 54 and Noah Stanley, aged 26, both of Shire Lane, Chalfont St Peter, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire and Maurice Smith, aged 36, New Fairplace Hill, Burgess Hill, West Sussex\u00a0 were all handed depravation orders for Molly and George the two lurcher dogs, the silver Mercedes car, all hare coursing paraphernalia, a locking knife and mobile phone.\u00a0 They must each pay \u00a33375 compensation for kennel and welfare fees.\u00a0\u00a0 They each must also pay CPS costs of \u00a385 and a victim surcharge of \u00a3114.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  Maurice Smith was also disqualified from keeping dogs for ten years and must undertake 120 hours of unpaid work.\u00a0 He was given a Criminal Behaviour Order for 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>  Billy Saunders, Noah Stanley (54) and Noah Stanley (26) were disqualified from keeping dogs for five years and must each undertake 60 hours of unpaid work.
