Amazon\u2019s satellite internet service, Project Kuiper, will partner with JetBlue<\/a> to provide in-flight Wi-Fi starting in 2027. It\u2019s Project Kuiper\u2019s first deal with an airline as it aims to keep up with the SpaceX-owned Starlink, which has already snagged satellite internet agreements with United Airlines<\/a>, Hawaiian Airlines<\/a>, Air France<\/a>, and several others.<\/p>\n

Amazon has been working on its Starlink competitor since 2019<\/a>, but the service has only just started to get off the ground. In April, Amazon successfully launched<\/a> its first round of 27 low-earth orbit satellites into space. The Project Kuiper constellation has since grown to more than 100 satellites<\/a>, making up a small fraction of the over 3,200 satellites it eventually plans to deploy. Amazon has another Project Kuiper launch set for later this month, but it still has ways to go to catch up to Starlink, which has more than 8,000 satellites<\/a> in orbit.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, Amazon\u2019s Panos Panay showed off a speed test using an \u201centerprise-grade customer terminal\u201d (aka, dish) to achieve a download speed of just over a gigabit. Fine, but we\u2019ll have to wait to see how it performs once individuals are using consumer-grade dishes at scale. Amazon says the first customers will start using the service this year, ahead of a broader rollout in 2026.<\/p>\n

Project Kuiper-powered Wi-Fi will be available on \u201cselect\u201d aircraft initially. Amazon says its satellites will provide lower latency and \u201cmore reliable service\u201d for passengers, as they orbit between 367 and 391 miles above Earth \u2014 far closer than the geostationary satellites that orbit around 22,369 miles above the planet.
