After 57 years with her partner Heather Sutherland, BAFTA<\/a>-winner Miriam Margolyes says they are ready to move in together. The prolific and outspoken actress, known for her roles in everything from Harry Potter<\/a> to Scorsese\u2019s the Age of Innocence, says that at 84, and with her health declining, she\u2019s keen to relocate somewhere warm and welcoming.<\/p>\n

She told The Observer that she and her university professor partner are planning a move to Tuscany: \u201cThe world around us has lost its charm. And we just want each other in a beautiful place which we know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although she recently dismissed claims that she was “at death’s door” as \u201cb******s,\u201d Miriam accepts that multiple health issues \u2013 including spinal stenosis, a condition that causes narrowing of the spinal canal, as well as osteoarthritis and recent knee surgery \u2013 have limited her mobility.<\/p>\n

But she\u2019s optimistic about Heather and herself enjoying a relaxed retirement under the Tuscan sun: \u201cWe can toddle along and laugh and just quietly subside into old age. But together.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a philosophical attitude to the inevitably of death she says: \u201cWe\u2019re here for such a short time. It\u2019s gone so fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMentally,\u201d she says, \u201cI\u2019m still fairly crisp.\u201d She\u2019s voiced support for assisted dying in the past, saying she\u2019d definitely consider it if a stroke left her unable to speak, doubly incontinent, or cognitively impaired<\/p>\n

She has little time for cosmetic surgery, saying: \u201cWhen you kiss someone, you don\u2019t want \u2018filler\u2019. You want the mouth. You want the subtle yielding of skin that belongs to someone you love or desire.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Miriam has few illusions about her own looks: \u201cI\u2019ve never been beautiful,\u201d she admits \u201cyet I\u2019ve managed.”<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve managed with the force of my personality and the energy of my intelligence,” she added. “And that will have to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

After her knee replacement surgery in 2016, Miriam told\u00a0Arthritis\u00a0Digest that after a five-week stay in a dedicated rehabilitation facility post-surgery, she worked with a personal trainer to help build up muscles around her knee, but she also moved house so that she wouldn’t have to go up and down stairs as much.<\/p>\n

She added that she has no plans to have her other knee replaced: \u201cThis knee needs to be done. It will not be done. I will not have any more operations.”<\/p>\n

Miriam underwent heart surgery back in 2023 to have her aortic valve replaced – a procedure that luckily meant she avoided a much more invasive open heart surgery, joking afterwards: “I’ve got a cow’s heart now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Her spinal problems mean that she\u2019s now registered disabled: “I can\u2019t walk very well, and I\u2019m registered disabled,\u201d she told Closer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I use all kinds of assistance. I\u2019ve got two sticks and a walker and they\u2019re such a bore, but I\u2019ve just got a mobility scooter, which is a lot of fun.”<\/p>\n
