The Spaniard also became <\/a>only the third player in the Open Era to win multiple singles titles at the US Open before turning 23, following John McEnroe and Pete Sampras.<\/p>\n

Speaking in the on-court presentation, he said: “First of all, I would like to start with Carlos and the whole team. You’re doing amazing. Congrats, I know it’s a lot of hard work behind this performance today, where he was better than me. So congrats, enjoy it. It’s a great moment.<\/p>\n

“And then, of course, my team. Thank you for supporting me, for understanding me, for working hard. We all know how much dedication we put in to be here in this stage. It has been an incredible season, a lot of big stages and matches we played throughout the season. <\/p>\n

“I tried my best today. I couldn’t do more. So, thank you for the support.”<\/p>\n

This defeat for Sinner means he is set to drop a place to world No. 2 in the ATP rankings, and will be leapfrogged by Alcaraz.<\/p>\n

It also ended a 27-match winning streak in hard-court Grand Slam matches for Sinner, as the third major final between the pair went in Alcaraz\u2019s favour.<\/p>\n

The pair have also contested three of this year\u2019s four Grand Slam finals, with Alcaraz coming out on top at Roland-Garros<\/a> and here at Flushing Meadows.This result also takes the head-to-head record to 10-5 in Alcaraz’s favour, as the Spaniard shifts his focus to the Laver Cup that gets underway later this month – live on TNT Sports and discovery+<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The competition sees Team Europe take on Team World in San Francisco, with Alcaraz representing the former, alongside Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jakub Mensik and Flavio Cobolli.<\/p>\n

Team Europe will be captained by Bjorn Borg, while Andre Agassi leads a Team World line-up comprising of Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Reilly Opelka, Alex Michelsen and Francisco Cerundolo.<\/p>\n

A Team Europe side which also consisted of Alcaraz, Ruud, Zverev and Cobolli, claimed a 13-11 win in last season’s competition held in Berlin. <\/p>\n

It all takes place between September 19 and 21.<\/p>\n

Tennis great Rod Laver was on hand to congratulate the US Open winner for his performance in New York.<\/p>\n

Taking to social media, Laver wrote: “Congratulations to US champion Carlos Alcaraz who would not be denied today in his enthralling rivalry with Sinner. Clocking up the majors – who can stop these two? Next stop the Laver Cup. I cannot wait.”<\/p>\n
