\n\tThe Supertramp<\/a> fan community was dealt a devastating blow over the weekend when news hit that co-founder Rick Davies has died<\/a> after a long battle with multiple myeloma.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs co-writer, along with partner Roger Hodgson, he was the voice and pianist behind Supertramp\u2019s most iconic songs, leaving an indelible mark on rock music history,\u201d the band wrote on Facebook. \u201cHis soulful vocals and unmistakable touch on the Wurlitzer became the heartbeat of the band\u2019s sound.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSupertramp enjoyed greater popularity in their native England than in America, even though hits like \u201cTake the Long Way Home\u201d and \u201cThe Logical Song\u201d remain in heavy rotation on classic rock radio. Those two songs were written by Hodgson, and he sang them as well. But their 1979 classic \u201cGoodbye Stranger\u201d is a Davies tune, and it hit Number 15 on the Hot 100 here. (It stalled at Number 57 in the U.K.)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGoodbye Stranger\u201d was given new life in the season four Office finale, \u201cGoodbye, Toby,\u201d when Michael Scott sang a slightly modified version of the song at a farewell party for human resources rep Toby Flenderson. \u201cThe real reason we\u2019re here is to say goodbye to a guy we\u2019ll probably never, ever see again,\u201d Scott says. \u201cAs a lot of you know, I\u2019m an accomplished songwriter. I have done things like \u2018Beers In Heaven\u2019 or \u2018Total Eclipse of the Fart.\u2019 I\u2019d love to be singing them, but I\u2019m not going to be doing that today. I\u2019m going to be doing something I wrote specifically for Toby.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn truth, Rick Davies wrote \u201cGoodbye Stranger.\u201d The only change Michael makes is swapping out \u201cstranger\u201d for \u201cToby,\u201d and adding in a manic \u201cToby\u2019s going away!\u201d scat section at the end. (We never got a chance to hear \u201cBeers in Heaven\u201d or \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Fart,\u201d but we imagine they were a bit more inventive.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGoodbye, Toby\u201d is a key Office episode since it introduces Amy Ryan\u2019s Holly Flax character, and wraps up the strike-shortened fourth season of the show. To many fans who feel that The Office<\/a> began a gradual downhill climb in the fifth season, when showrunner Greg Daniels and writer Michael Schur left to launch Parks and Rec, this episode concludes the show\u2019s golden age. (To be fair, there are many legendary episodes in season five, six, and seven. The heights just weren\u2019t as consistently high as two, three, and four. And the less said about seasons eight and nine, the better.)<\/p>\n

\n\tLike every episode of The Office, \u201cGoodbye, Toby\u201d is always playing somewhere. It did a lot to make one of Davies\u2019 most successful songs even more memorable. But from the perspective of Michael Scott, it was a massive failure.
