{"id":124832,"date":"2025-09-09T09:34:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T09:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/124832\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T09:34:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T09:34:11","slug":"uk-businesses-cut-jobs-at-fastest-pace-in-four-years-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/124832\/","title":{"rendered":"UK businesses cut jobs at fastest pace in four years, study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">UK businesses have cut jobs at the fastest pace in more than four years this summer, as firms continue to struggle with tax rises introduced under last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplemanagement.co.uk\/article\/1894055\/autumn-budget-2024-hr-needs-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">year\u2019s autumn budget<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Bank Of England\u2019s latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/decision-maker-panel\/2025\/august-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Decision Maker Panel<\/a> survey of 2,126 companies found firms reduced employment by an annual rate of 0.5 per cent in the three months to August, the fastest since 2021.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Companies also reported that annual wage growth was\u00a04.6 per cent in the three months to August, 0.1 percentage points lower than in the three months to July. Expectations for employment growth over the next year also weakened, falling by 0.3 percentage points to 0.2 per cent in the three months to August.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplemanagement.co.uk\/article\/1901698\/two-five-firms-facing-staff-shortages-amid-fastest-job-cuts-four-years-reports-find\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Two in five firms facing staff shortages amid fastest job cuts in four years, reports find<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplemanagement.co.uk\/article\/1907949\/uk-firms-slashing-jobs-record-rate-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">UK firms slashing jobs at record rate, study finds<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplemanagement.co.uk\/article\/1906611\/employers-face-biggest-redundancy-surge-decade-hiring-confidence-plummets-cipd-research-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Employers face biggest redundancy surge in a decade as hiring confidence plummets, CIPD research finds<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Almost half (46 per cent) of respondents said they had cut staff as a result of changes to employer national insurance (NI) contributions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Last year\u2019s budget saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplemanagement.co.uk\/article\/1896211\/autumn-budget-salary-sacrifice-antidote-rising-ni-costs-uk-employers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">employer NI rates<\/a> increase from 13.8 per cent to 15 per cent, with the rise coming into force in April this year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The survey also found 66 per cent of firms had lowered profit margins, 34 per cent had raised prices and 20 per cent were paying lower wages than they otherwise would have done.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">However, the central bank noted that fewer firms reported price rises, lower employment or lower wages before the higher NI rate took effect.<\/p>\n<p>Business leaders voice concerns<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Gerard Boon, managing director of mortgage brokerage Boon Brokers, said the statistics reflected a \u201cdeeply concerning reality\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cRising operational costs, weak productivity, the cost of living crisis and broader economic fragility have all helped create the perfect storm and businesses are struggling to keep their heads above water,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The government\u2019s recent changes to NI contributions had added pressure when the economy needed relief, Boon explained.
