Newcastle United are suddenly in a very healthy PSR position, but that is only after receiving a British record transfer fee.<\/p>\n

Alexander Isak joining Liverpool<\/a> for \u00a3125million will put the Magpies in an incredibly strong financial position, having spent the past year or two being held down by PSR<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Premier League\u2019s financial rules resulted in Newcastle selling Elliot Anderson<\/a> in 2024, while it also saw Eddie Howe<\/a> fail to invest across multiple transfer windows.<\/p>\n

That changed in 2025, with Newcastle United<\/a> able to spend some money. Their careful strategy in the past, combined with impressive sales of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly, allowed the Magpies to splash out.<\/p>\n

In total, Newcastle bought six new players<\/a> to the tune of more than \u00a3250million. But that came after three transfer windows without making a senior signing that improved Howe\u2019s starting XI.<\/p>\n

All the while, Aston Villa are struggling financially. That is why Jacob Ramsey joined Newcastle<\/a>, with the 24-year-old swapping Villa Park for St James\u2019 Park.<\/p>\n

It has been a challenging period for two clubs who have proven they are capable of upsetting the \u2018big six\u2019, only for PSR problems to shackle their development.<\/p>\n

In the eyes of Jamie Carragher on the Overlap YouTube channel, it feels like clubs like Newcastle and Villa \u2018can\u2019t go any further\u2019 under current profit and sustainability rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you look at an Aston Villa or a Newcastle, we\u2019d both agree both managers have done amazing jobs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpent a bit of money, but nothing reckless. They\u2019ve got to a certain point, and it feels like they can\u2019t go any further.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat will be the same if Everton get their act together, West Ham, those type of clubs that we don\u2019t see as the \u2018big six\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere can you ever have that hope that you might win the Premier League or even get into the Champions League. I do think it is fair to have discussions around PSR. Feels like it\u2019s not working right now for a lot of Premier League teams and you lose that little bit of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eddie Howe recently criticised PSR<\/p>\n

Newcastle United manager<\/a> Eddie Howe has been very vocal about his concerns regarding PSR. After all, it is the reason he is no longer working with Elliot Anderson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That exit has become even more painful as of late, with Anderson shining on his England debut<\/a>.<\/p>\n

PSR has forced Newcastle to sell players they wanted to keep, and stopped them from signing players they wanted to bring in.<\/p>\n

It has been a problem for Howe, who spoke out about PSR in August.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re controlled by PSR,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s still limiting what we can do and that\u2019s the reality.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve said many times, we\u2019re not the highest payers in the league. We\u2019re far from it and that is sometimes reflected in the choices players make.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s many players who have come here and haven\u2019t benefitted from the experience Newcastle can give you.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying in front of these supporters, that\u2019s an absolute privilege and an honour that\u2019s never lost on me. It\u2019s a special place to be. Some players have a different choice.
