Did you know PlayStation is enjoying its 30th anniversary in USA today?<\/p>\n

These celebrations do tend to drag on forever due to the lag that used to exist between hardware launches. You may recall, we already commemorated PlayStation\u2019s 30th anniversary<\/a> last year, as it deployed a year earlier in its native Japan.<\/p>\n

Anyway, to mark the occasion, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella<\/a> has released a list of the top 20 best-selling PlayStation games ever in USA. That extends to all platforms.<\/p>\n

Happy (NA) Birthday to PlayStation, first released on September 9, 1995.<\/p>\n

Here are the top 20 all-time best-selling games on PlayStation platforms in the US, from Circana’s Retail Tracking Service.<\/p>\n

The results may surprise you because they\u2019re much more modern than you\u2019d think, both across dollar and unit sales. Obviously, the price of games has increased so that dramatically affects the former, but the contemporary nature of the list applies to the latter, too.<\/p>\n

So, what are the results?<\/p>\n

Well, as you\u2019d probably expect, Grand Theft Auto 5<\/a> is the best-selling game in terms of dollar sales and units, which is no major surprise.<\/p>\n

Minecraft<\/a> is second in terms of units but seventh in dollar sales, due to its lower price.<\/p>\n

Much of the top ten is made up of various Call of Duty<\/a> games, with Red Dead Redemption 2<\/a> also recognised. In terms of PS2 titles, only GTA: San Andreas<\/a> and GTA: Vice City<\/a> feature.<\/p>\n

Credit must go out to Sony\u2019s more recent exclusives, like Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man<\/a>, God of War<\/a>, and The Last of Us<\/a>. They all feature on a list that\u2019s mostly dominated by Call of Duty. (You can see why Sony was so upset about that Activision acquisition, eh?)<\/p>\n

In terms of dollar sales, we\u2019d also like to spotlight Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man 2\u2019s<\/a> appearance. Considering that game is only two years old, it shows how well it\u2019s doing \u2013 although obviously it\u2019s higher selling price is a factor here. (Although you could apply that logic to dozens of other titles which don\u2019t feature, too.)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth noting that games included in hardware bundles aren\u2019t included here, so that\u2019s why you\u2019re not seeing the likes of Gran Turismo 3<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The main takeaway for us is just how recent and modern both of these lists look. It shows how much the industry has grown since the PS1 and PS2 days, because aside from those classic GTA releases, nothing else from that era gets a look in.<\/p>\n
