Foundation Trust (Credit: GOSH)<\/p>\n<p>Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) will roll out AI-scribe technology across outpatient settings this autumn, following a major NHS trial which demonstrated \u201ctransformative\u201d benefits for patients and clinicians.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalhealth.net\/2024\/11\/ambient-voice-technology-to-draft-patient-letters-piloted-for-nhs-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NHS England sponsored study<\/a>, led by GOSH, was conducted across nine NHS sites in London to assess the impact of\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/tortus.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">TORTUS<\/a>, which uses ambient voice technology to transcribe consultations and draft summarised clinical notes for clinicians to review.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Between June 2024 and February 2025, more than 17,000 patient encounters were evaluated across sites including hospitals, GP practices, mental health services and ambulance teams.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study found that AI-scribing technology can reduce clinician workload while improving patient care, with potential to unlock \u00a3834 million a year if rolled out nationally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr Shankar Sridharan, chief clinical information officer at GOSH NHS Foundation Trust, said: \u201cThis trial is significant as it shows the NHS can lead the way in safely adopting AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInnovation can\u2019t happen in isolation and by working collaboratively to test this technology across London \u2013 from hospitals to ambulances \u2013 we\u2019ve proven it can work at scale and make a real difference for both patients and clinicians.\u201d \u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Results of the study showed a 23.5% increase in direct patient interaction time during appointments, alongside an 8.2% reduction in overall appointment length when AI-scribes were used.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Findings from A&amp;E, tested at St George\u2019s University Hospital, showed a 13.4% increase in patients seen per shift and\u00a0time taken to complete the initial patient note halved.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ahmed Mahdi, consultant in emergency medicine for St George\u2019s University Hospital, said: \u201cIn such a fast-paced, high-pressured environment, every second counts \u2013 and this technology allows us to be more efficient, cut down on admin, and ultimately focus on patient care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter use of technology is central to the future of the NHS, and it\u2019s exciting to be at the forefront of an innovative pilot that\u2019s truly reshaping how we deliver care.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Clinicians described the AI-scribing tool as \u201ctransformative\u201d with particular benefits for neurodivergent staff and those working in high-pressure environments, with\u00a0a 35% reduction in clinicians feeling overwhelmed by notetaking.<\/p>\n<p>Patients and families also responded positively, with 92% consenting to AI-scribes use\u202fand many noting better engagement during consultations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr Vin Diwakar, clinical transformation director at NHSE, said: \u201cAllowing clinicians to spend nearly 25% more of their time interacting with patients and less time typing into a computer improves patient care and reduces the burden of administrative tasks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re striving to bring the benefits of innovations like this to the frontline so we can transform healthcare for patients as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalhealth.net\/2025\/07\/nhs-will-be-digital-by-default-under-10-year-health-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">10 year health plan<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Economic modelling undertaken by York Health Economics Consortium\u00a0found that if one additional patient was seen per shift per clinician, this equates to \u00a3270.93 added capacity per day.<\/p>\n<p>Scaling nationally (11,055 A&amp;E clinicians in England), AI-scribe use could yield 9,259 extra A&amp;E consultations each day, saving \u00a3176 million in documentation time and unlocking an additional \u00a3658 million in capacity annually.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The trial\u2019s findings have informed<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalhealth.net\/2025\/04\/government-encourages-clinicians-to-use-ai-scribing-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> NHSE\u2019s national guidance on AI-enabled scribing<\/a> and\u00a0the creation of the\u202f<a
