Merseyside Police has issued an update following a serious crash on the M57. Emergency services were called shortly after 3pm today (Wednesday, September 10) to reports of a single-vehicle collision<\/a> on the northbound side of the M57 near junction 3 in Knowsley<\/a>.<\/p>\n On arrival, crews found a car had veered off the motorway and caught fire. The condition of the driver or any passengers involved<\/a> has not yet been confirmed.<\/p>\n An air ambulance landed at the scene, alongside several fire engines, ambulances, and police vehicles.<\/p>\n Initially, only the northbound carriageway was closed, but National Highways later confirmed the southbound side had also been shut and would remain closed for the rest of the evening.<\/a><\/p>\n However, in an update this evening, Merseyside Police said the southbound carriageway has now reopened. In a statement posted to X, the force said: “The southbound carriageway between junction 3 and 2 on the M57 has now reopened. The northbound carriageway between junction 2 to 3 will still remain closed overnight. Please avoid the area and find an alternative route.”<\/p>\n Motorists reported standstill traffic earlier this evening, with congestion stretching back to junction 4 (Knowsley). Drivers were urged to avoid the area, with diversions through Huyton<\/a> in place.<\/p>\n A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: \u201cRoad closures are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area while the matter is being dealt with.
