{"id":130738,"date":"2025-09-11T20:49:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T20:49:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/130738\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T20:49:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T20:49:07","slug":"womens-rugby-world-cup-babalwa-latsha-tackles-period-poverty-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/130738\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s Rugby World Cup: Babalwa Latsha tackles period poverty in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On the pitch, South Africa made history reaching a first Women&#8217;s Rugby World Cup quarter-final thanks to pool-stage victories over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/rugby-union\/articles\/cy7y3gj5nz2o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brazil<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/rugby-union\/articles\/c30zee5jj03o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Italy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Women&#8217;s Boks lost all three of their games at the 2021 edition of the tournament, having missed the 2017 finals altogether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Their struggles are a contrast to South Africa&#8217;s men, who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/rugby-union\/67252413\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record four-time Rugby World Cup winners.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I think the tide has turned and we&#8217;ve garnered so much momentum, which hopefully will lead into the right direction &#8211; being that women should become a fully professional entity in South Africa,&#8221; Latsha said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I think brands and businesses are starting to see that investing in women&#8217;s rugby and women&#8217;s sports makes financial sense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Those are things that 10, 15 years ago were unheard of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;[But] we aren&#8217;t going to get lost in too far into the future. I think we need to look and be where our feet are first and to make every performance count.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">South Africa face a daunting task in the last eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/rugby-union\/articles\/c179evqlwyko\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">when they face New Zealand in Exeter on Saturday<\/a> (12:00 GMT).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Black Ferns are rated as the third-best side in the world and are seven places above South Africa in the global rankings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, Latsha is looking at the bigger picture, and the development of the women&#8217;s game which has been displayed at this year&#8217;s tournament in England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The amount of work and progression that has happened since the last World Cup has been immense,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I think that finally there&#8217;s some type of reward for the work that has been happening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;New barriers have been broken and new pathways have been created.
