It\u2019s amazing!\u201d Or maybe you\u2019ve been the one to say it. Either way, it\u2019s not surprising.<\/p>\n<p>Diet trends are as old as, well, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/health\/la-he-diet-timeline-20150228-story.html#:%7E:text=Thankfully%2C%20Champagne%20is%20dubbed%20%E2%80%9Ca,Diet.com%20and%20various%20websites.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the grapefruit diet of the 1930s<\/a>. But in today\u2019s social media world, endless online wellness hacks, fad diets and nutrition misinformation are spreading faster than ever. <\/p>\n<p>Why? Quick-fix regimens gain traction easily for many reasons. Our diets are deeply personal and, for some people, evoke a sense of devotion, almost like a religion.<\/p>\n<p>The science of food choices<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.heliyon.2024.e32492\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Food choices are complex<\/a>. When we go to a supermarket, what we put in our basket is influenced by many factors. <\/p>\n<p>Some are biological, like our <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/brainsci11121587\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brain\u2019s tendency to prefer high-calorie foods<\/a>. Others are cultural, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/ijerph182211967\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">like the staples we grew up eating<\/a>. And some are basic business strategy, like the store we shop at nudging our choices by placing certain products at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scubefixtures.com\/blog\/the-psychology-of-product-placement-in-grocery-stores\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eye level<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman grocery shopping with a basket.\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/file-20250903-56-2ofdqw.jpg\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>              What we choose to buy on our grocery runs is informed by culture, biology and marketing strategy.<br \/>\n              (Unsplash)<\/p>\n<p>Nutrition and public health scientists, however, largely agree that when it comes to eating behaviour, <a href=\"https:\/\/ncceh.ca\/resources\/subject-guides\/food-environments\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the food environment is key<\/a>. The food environment refers to the complex systems that determine which types of food we have access to. It has a physical component, such as the grocery stores around our neighbourhood or workplace, but it also includes other important and highly effective factors like marketing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.advnut.2022.12.003\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In our 2023 meta-analysis<\/a>, we found that exposure to food ads activated brain regions involved in eating behaviour. When people, regardless of age, were exposed to food ads, they ate more food afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>This evidence, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/bmjnph-2023-000663\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alongside a vast body of research<\/a>, highlights just how strongly our environment influences what we eat, and how much. It also raises an important question: if traditional media and marketing can shape our eating behaviours, how much stronger is that influence today in our infodemic-driven digital reality?<\/p>\n<p>The misinformation problem<\/p>\n<p>Health misinformation on TikTok, Instagram and the like, is <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.socscimed.2019.112552\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nothing new<\/a>. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, with more time at home, the perfect recipe for the sharing of faulty claims emerged. And the nutrition space was no exception. <\/p>\n<p>Countless personalities on social media spread nutrition \u201cadvice\u201d that should be avoided. Two examples that have persisted on social media are the carnivore diet \u2014 based solely on eating animal products \u2014 and the anti\u2013seed oil movement, which blames seed oils for many diet-related diseases. These controversial and thoroughly debunked recommendations have become so influential that they are even endorsed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mariannekrasny\/2025\/05\/23\/seed-oils-upfs-and-carni-bros-is-rfk-making-america-healthy-again\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Secretary of Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a line graph shows google searches for seed oil and carnivore diet\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/file-20250901-56-opjkrs.png\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>              Popularity of Google searches for the terms \u2018seed oil\u2019 and \u2018carnivore diet\u2019 from 2019 to today. Their popularity has risen lately.<br \/>\n              (Google Trends), Author provided (no reuse)<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/s1368980023000873\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2022 study<\/a> reviewed more than 60 articles on online nutrition content, and about half concluded that the information quality was low.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the more notable aspect, however, is the fervent and often combative way people react during these debates. Why do people display such passion \u2014 even tribalism \u2014 when discussing food and nutrition? What we eat and what we believe about our food runs deep. So deep, in fact, that it can become part of who we are.<\/p>\n<p>Food and personal identity<\/p>\n<p>Food is connected with identity in intricate ways. <a href=\"https:\/\/ecampusontario.pressbooks.pub\/foodstudies\/chapter\/food-culture-personal-identity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It acts as a socio-cultural force that shapes how we see ourselves<\/a>. But certain traits that overlap with believing in conspiracy theories, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/doi\/10.1037\/bul0000392\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">relying too much on intuition and being antagonistic<\/a>, can leave some particularly vulnerable to misinformation. They encounter nutrition-related misinformation online and become deeply entrenched in a specific diet and lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Adopting a fad diet can also mean finding a community, or at least, a sense of belonging. It\u2019s not just about following a guru figure proclaiming the diet\u2019s benefits; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/journalism-facts\/misinformation-belief-action\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it\u2019s also about dozens of peers confirming those benefits<\/a>, sharing tips and recounting their experiences. This creates an <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2023301118\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">echo chamber<\/a> that reinforces beliefs and shields them from external skepticism. <\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t help that many claims about fad diets are framed in almost religious terms. <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2015\/04\/food-fad-evidence-logic-and-science-can-fight-misperceptions-about-nutrition.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In a 2015 Slate piece<\/a>, Alan Levinovitz, professor of religion at James Madison University, wrote: <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvil foods harm you, but they are sinfully delicious, guilty pleasures. Good foods, on the other hand, are real and clean. These are religious mantras, helpfully dividing up foods according to moralistic dichotomies. Of course, natural and processed, like real and clean, are not scientific terms, and neither is good nor evil. Yet it is precisely such categories, largely unquestioned, that determine most people\u2019s supposedly scientific decisions about what and how to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elevating claims about the healthfulness of certain diets to the level of the sacred is a striking phenomena. So much so that, for some, criticism of a diet can feel like criticism of the self. This identity-driven attachment is one reason why fad diets thrive on social media. They spread because they offer people something deeper: <a href=\"https:\/\/asteriskmag.com\/issues\/02\/read-this-not-that-the-hidden-cost-of-nutrition-misinformation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moral clarity and even purpose<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So the next time you see an influencer promoting their diet, ask yourself: are they sharing evidence-based advice in a composed and balanced way, or are they overly passionate, alarmist and entrenched in their views?
