The video footage was taken by John Rees from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/swansea\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Swansea<\/a> and shows a number of dead bull huss \u2013 or dogfish \u2013 and rays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Rees claimed the footage was taken after a local fishing competition had taken place. \u201cI counted at least 15 dead dogfish and rays,\u201d he told WalesOnline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSome had fishing tackle attached. They generally prefer deeper water and rockier ground where they can stay in cracks and crevices such as at Knab Rock where Mr Rees took the footage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">According to the group Fishing in Wales bull huss, sometimes called the greater spotted dogfish, can grow up to five feet in exceptional cases. Most caught along Wales\u2019 coast weigh between four pounds and 10 pounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Although they\u2019re not usually specifically targeted bull huss are often fished by anglers as a by-catch and as a result they are now listed as near-threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757697909_180_0_CaptureJPG.jpg\" alt=\"The image shows one dead bull huss shark on its back on the rocks\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Mr Rees said he counted at least 15 dead sharks and rays in the water at Knab Rock(Image: John Rees)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Rees added: \u201cAnglers need to be aware of the impact of their actions and ensure they are taking measures to minimise suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Days later Cameron Gigg celebrated catching a bull huss off the pier in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/porthcawl\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Porthcawl<\/a>. He said he had his picture taken with the 11-pound shark and released it appropriately back into the water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI think I\u2019m the first person to catch one there,\u201d Cameron said. \u201cI was very shocked when I caught one. I didn\u2019t know I had it on the end of the line but it was massive. They\u2019re brilliant animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSomeone I know fishes down at Porthcawl a lot and said he\u2019s never known anyone catch one down there. I know they are commonly caught down Knab Rock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">On the bull huss being found dead at Knab Rock he said: \u201cI have now seen quite a few videos and posts on social media about them being killed. It\u2019s awful to see. I\u2019ve been going nuts about it.
