Dan Evans’ match in the Guangzhou Huangpu International Tennis Open took a bizarre twist when he quit halfway through.<\/p>\n

The Englishman was leading Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-4 2-1 when he threw his racket to the floor and claimed he’d broken his wrist.<\/p>\n

The 35-year-old was into the quarter-finals of the competition after beating the home favourite Charles Chen and fellow Brit Oliver Crowford.<\/p>\n

Evans<\/a> was looking good to make the last four when he disagreed with the umpire for a call.<\/p>\n

Why was Evans angry with the umpire?<\/p>\n

The umpire ruled that Cerundolo hit shot just inside the line, while Evans thought it was out.<\/p>\n

Had it been called out, Evans would have had a break in the second set.<\/p>\n

In a heated discussion, he said: “The ball is this far out.<\/p>\n

“You can see it? trying your best again? No! He’s [Cerundolo] saying sorry to me, he’s saying sorry, you understand that.”<\/p>\n

A member of the crowd didn’t take too kindly to Evans’ outburst, and the Brit could be heard responding with: “Thank you, you are as well.”<\/p>\n

Evans then dropped his racket to the floor.<\/p>\n

He still managed to break Cerundolo later in that game despite being taken to a deuce, but soon became clear he couldn’t carry on.<\/p>\n

Evans forced to stop due to injury<\/p>\n

Evans was first handed a code violation for his comments, and then at 2-1, he approached the umpire and informed him he’d damaged his hand.<\/p>\n

And as he walked off, he could be heard saying, ‘my wrist literally broke’.<\/p>\n

The Brit carried on playing one-handed before throwing his racket down while leading 2-1 and informing the umpire that he’d broken his wrist, and he went to Cerunoldo to concede.<\/p>\n

It’s a blow for Evans, who had dropped as low as 217 in the world rankings, but he was steadily building himself up.<\/p>\n

It now remains to be seen just how bad the injury is, and he’ll no doubt have scan, and we’ll have to wait for an update.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Cerunoldo faces another Brit in Billy Harris in the semi-final.<\/p>\n
