It stands to reason that squats will help you achieve this, but a physical therapist and certified running coach has taken to Instagram to say there are more effective exercises to use instead.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/runningwithrichelle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/runningwithrichelle\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Richelle Weeks<\/a> posted that unweighted squats, or even squats with a light dumbbell, aren\u2019t challenging enough to help runners get stronger quads.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"432f677c-40c7-4ed1-b2aa-1c0c04c37566-2\">Instead, she recommends using these five moves, below, to increase quad strength, and improve running speed and performance.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-how-to-do-weeks-quad-exercises-for-runners\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>How to do Weeks\u2019 quad exercises for runners<\/p>\n<p id=\"f89c617f-e2cd-44f5-b15f-b68925cd4ebc\">I contacted Weeks to find out more and she says to aim to include one or two of these exercises in supportive strength workout two to three times a week, depending on how much you are running. \u201cHigher mileage runners may struggle to fit in more than two,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-what-are-the-best-exercises-for-runners\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What are the best exercises for runners?<\/p>\n<p id=\"a83aa934-e16f-48bb-8a6f-57b1ababcce1\">\u201cA heavy back or front squat can have great benefits for building overall strength,\u201d says Weeks, \u201cbut you\u2019d want to make sure you\u2019re also including unilateral (single side) movements to target any muscle imbalances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRunning is a single-leg activity, so that means that we should be working our quads in single-leg positions like lunges, step-ups and unilateral squats,\u201d says Weeks.<\/p>\n<p>As well as the workout above, Weeks says adding single-leg calf raises, single-leg RDLs, side plank toe taps, weighted lunges and side-to-side jump squats to your fitness routine can improve running performance.
