{"id":134617,"date":"2025-09-13T13:31:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-13T13:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/134617\/"},"modified":"2025-09-13T13:31:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T13:31:07","slug":"australia-on-brink-of-davis-cup-exit-as-de-minaur-stunned-by-brave-belgian-collignon-davis-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/134617\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia on brink of Davis Cup exit as De Minaur stunned by brave Belgian Collignon | Davis Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tennis officials have been branded \u201cbarbaric\u201d as Australia slumped to a shock 2-0 deficit in a dramatic start to their second-round <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/daviscup\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Davis Cup<\/a> qualifying tie against Belgium in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lowly ranked Raphael Collignon overcame severe cramping to upset world No 8 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/alex-de-minaur\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex de Minaur<\/a> 7-5 3-6 6-3 in a three-hour, 12-minute epic before Zizou Bergs beat Jordan Thompson 7-6 (4) 6-4 in Saturday\u2019s second singles rubber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The twin defeats leave Australia needing to recover from 2-0 down for only the second time in almost a century to reach the quarter-finals for a fourth straight year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Two-time Cup-winning great Todd Woodbridge was furious officials didn\u2019t call for a physio to treat Collignon when he was writhing in agony on the court midway through the opening game of the deciding set against de Minaur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is ridiculous,\u201d Woodbridge said in commentary for the Nine Network. \u201cThis is so, so cruel. Get the physio out there, for heaven\u2019s sake. This is more important [than the result]. This is a health issue now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Both the tournament doctor and referee came to the court to assist the 23-year-old, but Woodbridge said that was \u201cnot enough\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019ve just sent a couple of messages just trying to clarify what the ruling is here because I thought the understanding was that we got rid of the barbaric look of what we\u2019ve just seen,\u201d the doubles legend said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Not allowed a medical time-out because cramping is deemed to be the result of a \u201clack of conditioning\u201d, Collignon took his cap off and appeared to be walking to the umpire\u2019s chair to shake hands during that first game of the third set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But the world No 91 changed his mind, played on, fended off six break points and heroically battled to the biggest win of his career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt feels amazing. I thought I wouldn\u2019t be able to finish,\u201d Collignon said. \u201cI tried to play with that strength, tried to go for it, focus on the serve and I don\u2019t know how I won. Yeah, crazy.
