Aidan O\u2019Brien\u2019s Scandinavia, the 2-1 favourite, held off the late charge of Rahiebb (14-1) by a neck to give Europe\u2019s pre-eminent trainer his 16th Group One win of the season in the St Leger<\/a>, the season\u2019s final Classic.<\/p>\n

Scandinavia had been joined at the head of the betting by his stable companion Lambourn, the Derby winner, earlier in the day but late money for Tom Marquand\u2019s mount was rewarded as the jockey made maximum use of his mount\u2019s proven stamina.<\/p>\n

Lambourn cut out much of the running under Sean Levey but faded to finish only fourth after Marquand sent Scandinavia for home inside the final quarter mile. Stay True, a third O\u2019Brien-trained runner in the seven-strong field, followed Rahiebb home in third.<\/p>\n

Marquand was called up for the ride on Scandinavia after Ryan Moore, O\u2019Brien\u2019s stable No 1, was ruled out<\/a> for the season with a leg injury last week, while Wayne Lordan, the trainer\u2019s No 2, was absent because of a suspension.<\/p>\n

\u201cI rode him as a two-year-old at Newmarket and really liked him,\u201d Marquand said. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those, sometimes the stars align, I never thought I\u2019d be winning a Leger on him but it\u2019s nice riding those horses early on that you know are going to progress into staying types.<\/p>\n
