While performing at London<\/a>\u2019s Wembley Stadium last night<\/a>, Coldplay<\/a> frontman Chris Martin<\/a> gave a controversial shoutout to the family of American right-wing activist Charlie Kirk<\/a>.<\/p>\n Coldplay, comprising Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion, brought their Music of the Spheres show<\/a> back to the capital on Friday, with thousands attending to hear their hits and marvel at their now world-famous light spectacle.<\/p>\n During the show, Martin, 48, addresses the crowd<\/a> on multiple occasions, but it was his speech before the band\u2019s 2005 tune Fix You that caught people\u2019s attention afterwards online.<\/p>\n In a clip shared on social media, Martin urged fans to put their arms in the air, telling them: \u2018For the final time for a few years in London, let\u2019s raise our hands like this, and send love anywhere you wanna send it in the world.<\/p>\n \u2018There are so many places that might need it today.\u2019<\/p>\n He proceeded to name-check Kirk, 31, who died earlier this week<\/a> in what authorities called a political assassination.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018So, here it comes from London. You can send this to your brother or your sister, you can send it to the families of people who have been going through terrible stuff, you can send it to Charlie Kirk\u2019s family, you can send it to anybody\u2019s family.<\/p>\n \u2018You can send it to people you disagree with, but you send them love anyway\u2026 You can send it to peaceful people in the Middle East, in Ukraine and Russia.\u2019<\/p>\n As people reacted to Martin\u2019s words, several Coldplay fans expressed feeling \u2018disappointed\u2019 due to the divisive nature of Kirk\u2019s beliefs.<\/p>\n X user @rossmacronald declared that they would \u2018walk out\u2019 if Martin encouraged such a tribute at a concert they attended, while @aspace0dyssey called the speech \u2018insane\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018I booed that was insane. The fact that\u2019s the only name he mentioned as well\u2019, they tweeted.<\/p>\n Kirk himself was by no means a Coldplay fan\u2014quite the opposite.<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t In a resurfaced video filmed after the kiss cam debacle<\/a>, he told his followers: \u2018I would rather be caught dead than be at a Coldplay concert.<\/p>\n \u2018I would rather go to a WNBA (Women\u2019s National Basketball Association) game than go to a Coldplay concert. I couldn\u2019t think of something more boring and banal and a waste of time.\u2019<\/p>\n Kirk\u2019s death has sparked mass debate online after he was shot at a Utah Valley University show on Wednesday, midway through answering a question on gun violence in the United States.<\/p>\n The father of two was a known ally of Republican President\u00a0Donald Trump and co-founder and chief executive of the right-wing youth organisation Turning Point USA.<\/p>\n In a video tribute after the fatal shooting<\/a>, Trump said: \u2018I am filled with grief and anger at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n \u2018He inspired millions, and tonight all who knew him and loved him are united in shock and horror.\u2019<\/p>\n To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web \u2018This is a dark moment for America,\u2019 he added, declaring that he would take action against \u2018political violence\u2019.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: \u2018My thoughts this evening are with the loved ones of\u00a0Charlie\u00a0Kirk.<\/p>\n \u2018It is heartbreaking that a young family has been robbed of a father and a husband.<\/p>\n \u2018We must all be free to debate openly and freely without fear\u2014there can be no justification for political violence.\u2019<\/p>\n In recent days, hundreds have attended vigils for Kirk (including in London), who acquired a following with his videos of confrontations between himself and liberal students.
