A roll-on deodorant <\/a>used by thousands of women every day has come under scrutiny after dozens reported painful rashes, chemical burns, and even thrush following use.<\/p>\n

The deodorant in question, Mitchum\u2019s 48-hour roll-on anti-perspirant, has been trending on TikTok and other social platforms as women share images of angry red rashes spreading under their arms. Many say the irritation was so severe it required creams, antibiotics, or antifungal treatment.<\/p>\n

‘It hurt so very badly and happened after a random amount of uses,’ one woman told the Daily Mail<\/a>. ‘I\u2019d been using the same bottle regularly for a while until it suddenly flared up.’<\/p>\n

Others described stinging, itching, and soreness that left them unable to sleep<\/a>, while some reported the reaction developing into thrush.<\/p>\n

On Instagram, Mitchum UK apologised to affected customers, stressing that the issue was not due to the product formula itself but to a change in packaging and raw material processing.<\/p>\n

‘We are sorry to those who were impacted and for the time it took to complete the investigation,’ the brand said. The company added that ‘a change in the manufacturing process of one of our raw materials altered how the product interacts with the skin in some consumers.’ Batch numbers linked to the issue have since been published, with full refunds available.<\/p>\n

Professor Penny Ward, from King\u2019s College London, explained that certain ingredients present in the updated formulation may act as irritants<\/p>\n

Acetyl cedrene \u2013 shown to be irritating in patch testing.<\/p>\n

Vanillin \u2013 another fragrance component that can cause reactions in sensitive individuals.<\/p>\n

‘Fragrances<\/a> are the most common allergens in deodorants,’ she told The Daily Mail. ‘Most dermatitis rashes are itchy rather than painful; pain may indicate infection and could require antibiotics or antifungal cream.’<\/p>\n

She advised anyone experiencing a rash to stop using the product immediately, allow the skin to settle, and seek pharmacy or GP advice if needed.<\/p>\n

Dermatologists explain that irritant contact dermatitis can occur when a substance directly inflames or damages the skin, often causing burning or stinging straight after application.<\/p>\n

By contrast, allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed immune reaction, with redness and itching developing a day or two after exposure. Repeated use can ‘teach’ the immune system to treat an ingredient as an allergen, triggering increasingly strong responses.<\/p>\n

TikTok users have been vocal about their experiences, with many videos under hashtags like #MitchumDeodorant and #RedArmpits drawing thousands of views.<\/p>\n

‘The marks have been awful, not only unbelievably painful but also embarrassing, especially during holiday season,’ wrote one user.<\/p>\n

Another added: ‘I\u2019ve purchased these for years. All of a sudden a new bottle left me with chemical burns \u2014 and it looks like I\u2019m not the only one.’<\/p>\n

What to do if you\u2019re affected<\/p>\n

Stop using the product immediately.<\/p>\n

Soothe irritation with mild emollients or aloe vera<\/a> gel.<\/p>\n

Seek advice from a pharmacist if the rash persists \u2013 topical antihistamines or corticosteroids may be recommended.<\/p>\n

If pain, spreading, or infection develops, consult a GP.<\/p>\n

While Mitchum\u2019s A-list reputation for sweat and odour control has made it a cult favourite, women experiencing reactions are encouraged to check batch numbers, apply for a refund, and switch to a gentler deodorant until the issue is resolved.<\/p>\n
