There\u2019s been noise around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64927866\/beetroot-juice-performance-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a64927866\/beetroot-juice-performance-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"beetroot\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">beetroot<\/a>, tart cherry juice, and now we\u2019re learning more about the naturally performance-enhancing benefits of blackcurrants. In particular, New Zealand blackcurrants \u2013 which are grown in rich, fertile soil and higher UV levels to produce more nutrient-dense berries.   <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Thanks to their antioxidant content, blackcurrants are generally great for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"health\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">health<\/a>. Although perhaps overshadowed in the UK by their berry counterparts, like the Great British strawberry, blackcurrants contain four times as much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a34875601\/vita-coco-vitamin-c-gym-gains\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/food-drink\/a34875601\/vita-coco-vitamin-c-gym-gains\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"vitamin C\" data-node-id=\"4.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vitamin C<\/a> as oranges. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Blackcurrants contain anthocyanins \u2013 the flavonoid responsible for the berries\u2019 deep purple colour \u2013 which can improve blood flow by promoting vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels). Unsurprisingly, increased blood flow supports multiple areas of health. One being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/sex\/better-sex\/a745821\/natural-viagra\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/sex\/better-sex\/a745821\/natural-viagra\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"erectile dysfunction\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">erectile dysfunction<\/a>, most cases of which are caused by insufficient blood flow. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">One 2016<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26762373\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26762373\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\" study\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> study<\/a>, which tracked more than 25,000 men over 10 years, found that just three or more servings a week of foods, including anthocyanin-rich berries\/blackcurrants, were 19% less likely to have erectile dysfunction than men who didn\u2019t consume such foods.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"man holdinholding plate of mixed healthy food, summer berry fruits on white plate\" title=\"Performance benefits of blackcurrants\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"5616\" height=\"3744\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/man-holdinholding-plate-of-mixed-healthy-food-royalty-free-image-1752591540.pjpeg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/>mikroman6\/\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The health benefits of berries are boundless<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">As well as the myriad health benefits of adding more blackcurrants to your diet, there have also been multiple studies published more recently about the tangible performance benefits of blackcurrants, particularly when consumed in the form of a concentrated extract. <\/p>\n<p>3 Performance Benefits of Blackcurrant Extract1\/ Athletic Performance Boost<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">The benefit of blackcurrants\u2019 rich anthocyanin content may extend to tangible athletic performance improvements, according to the findings of several recent studies. One new<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11677273\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11677273\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\" study\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> study<\/a>, published in the journal Nutrients, found that New Zealand blackcurrant extract could improve athletic performance by as much as 38%.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Researchers studied the effects of seven-day supplementation of 600mg CurraNZ on 16 recreationally active men. In a double-blind, randomised, cross-over study, all participants had both the blackcurrant extract and the placebo treatment (so they acted as their own controls).<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">The men participated in multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/gym-wear\/g29427102\/best-treadmill\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/gym-wear\/g29427102\/best-treadmill\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"treadmill\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">treadmill<\/a> tests following supplementation with the blackcurrant extract and placebo, with researchers evaluating performance improvements based on a &#8216;smallest worthwhile change&#8217; of 173 meters. In other words, this was the minimum distance considered meaningful following supplementation. They found that with the blackcurrant supplement, runners covered about 8\u202f% more distance on average during intense bursts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a64790531\/treadmill-running-30-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a64790531\/treadmill-running-30-days\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"treadmill running\" data-node-id=\"16.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">treadmill running<\/a>, with the highest responder improving by 38% in one trial following supplementation.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">And for any cyclists out there, more blackcurrant-related good news. In this <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5968979\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5968979\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>, researchers found that after seven days of New Zealand blackcurrant extract supplementation, cyclists improved their 16.1km <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a36160269\/cycling-workout-100-kilometers-one-week-challenge-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a36160269\/cycling-workout-100-kilometers-one-week-challenge-results\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cycling\" data-node-id=\"17.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cycling<\/a> time trial performance by an average of 2.4%. That\u2019s about 44 seconds. Pretty impressive. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/jissn.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12970-020-00354-9\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/jissn.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12970-020-00354-9\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"2020 review and meta-analyses\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2020 review and meta-analyses<\/a> of 16 studies on blackcurrant supplementation also concluded that blackcurrant has a small but significant effect on sport performance, with no known detrimental side effects.<\/p>\n<p>2\/ Recovery Support <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Again, we have blackcurrants\u2019 anthocyanin-rich content to thank here. Following intense bouts of exercise, increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a65377412\/fasting-inflammation-new-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a65377412\/fasting-inflammation-new-research\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"inflammation\" data-node-id=\"20.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">inflammation<\/a> and oxidative stress (when the body struggles to neutralise free radicals with antioxidants) are parts of the body\u2019s natural response, so it makes sense that consuming an antioxidant-rich substance, aka blackcurrant extract, would help combat this. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Indeed, one recent <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8399782\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8399782\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> (a double-blind randomised trial) of 27 men and women found that eight days of New Zealand blackcurrant extract supplementation reduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a62849777\/muscle-recovery-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a62849777\/muscle-recovery-research\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscle damage\" data-node-id=\"21.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">muscle damage<\/a> and improved functional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a65045978\/nutrition-running-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/nutrition\/a65045978\/nutrition-running-recovery\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recovery\" data-node-id=\"21.5\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recovery<\/a> following a bout of strenuous isokinetic (where a machine controls the speed of movement) resistance exercise. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/nutrition\/articles\/10.3389\/fnut.2019.00073\/full\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/nutrition\/articles\/10.3389\/fnut.2019.00073\/full\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> found that a one-off dose of New Zealand blackcurrant extract one hour before a 30-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/gym-wear\/g35508904\/best-rowing-machines\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/gym-wear\/g35508904\/best-rowing-machines\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"rowing\" data-node-id=\"22.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rowing<\/a> exercise facilitated recovery from exercise-induced oxidative stress and preserved circulating neutrophil (a type of white blood cell that is the first to respond to infection and inflammation) function. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">The researchers later conducted a larger <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32175326\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32175326\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>, in which participants consumed New Zealand blackcurrant extract daily for five weeks prior, and found that it enhanced the exercise recovery effectiveness of the single pre-exercise dose. It also promoted the beneficial and protective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory cellular events that facilitate exercise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a65313971\/idris-elba-health-fitness\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/health\/a65313971\/idris-elba-health-fitness\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recovery\" data-node-id=\"23.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recovery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3\/ Reduced Running-Induced GI Symptoms<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">While this performance benefit is quite specific, it can still really make a difference, especially when exercising in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a32639840\/exercising-in-the-heat\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a32639840\/exercising-in-the-heat\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"heat\" data-node-id=\"25.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">heat<\/a>. Debilitating stitch on a heatwave run? We\u2019ve been there, it\u2019s not pleasant. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Well, a brand-new <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39996414\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39996414\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"26.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> suggests that New Zealand blackcurrant extract could help you avoid that. Participants supplemented with blackcurrant extract for seven days before running on a treadmill in hot conditions (34\u00b0C and around 40% humidity) for one hour at 65% of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a62441580\/what-is-vo2-max\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a62441580\/what-is-vo2-max\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"VO2 max\" data-node-id=\"26.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">VO2 max<\/a>. They repeated this with a placebo, acting as their own control.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">With the placebo, 11 participants (92%) reported gastrointestinal symptoms (eg, stitches and bloating), but with the blackcurrant extract, this reduced to only four participants (25%). Many of the studies are relatively small, and findings have not always been consistent across individuals.
