But for those who reside firmly in the former club, you might be wondering: how long should I plank for?<\/p>\n<p>Planking, which refers to the pose where you hold a push-up position either on your hands or on your forearms for a period of time under tension, is often referred to as the cr\u00e8me de la cr\u00e8me of exercises &#8211; and it\u2019s for good reason.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10766451\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10766451\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">research<\/a> confirms that this OG exercise is \u201cparticularly effective\u201d in enhancing overall body stability and mobility by focusing on strengthening the abdominal muscles. So even if you\u2019re unable to hold a plank on your forearms and toes, there\u2019s always another modification to try.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy favourite plank alternative is the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/dead-bugs-every-day\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/dead-bugs-every-day\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dead bug<\/a>,\u201d says Betts. \u201cIt&#8217;s excellent for teaching core stability while moving your limbs, which is more like real life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unlike planks, where you&#8217;re static, dead bugs add movement. &#8220;This builds stability through motion, not just holding position,&#8221; Betts says. &#8220;Your brain learns to keep your spine neutral while your arms and legs move independently. That&#8217;s functional core strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What are the benefits of trying a plank? <\/p>\n<p>Dropping down to the ground and holding your bodyweight up on your forearms and toes doesn\u2019t just give your full body a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/tag\/workouts\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/tag\/workouts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">workout<\/a>. \u201cPlanks teach your core to function as a stabiliser rather than a prime mover,\u201d explains Betts. \u201cThis translates directly to better posture, reduced <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/lower-back-pain-exercises\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/lower-back-pain-exercises\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lower back pain<\/a> and improved performance in compound movements like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/how-effective-are-squats\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/how-effective-are-squats\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">squats<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/how-effective-are-deadlifts\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/how-effective-are-deadlifts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deadlifts<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It probably comes as no surprise to hear that a plank also builds endurance in your <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/best-deep-core-exercises\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/best-deep-core-exercises\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deep core muscles<\/a>, particularly the transverse abdominis. \u201cThis muscle acts like a natural weight belt, creating intra-abdominal pressure that protects your spine during daily activities and exercise,\u201d Betts explains.<\/p>\n<p>Betts says that planks also improve proprioception, which is your body\u2019s awareness of its position in space. &#8220;Holding the position requires constant micro-adjustments from your nervous system, which increases your body control and balance,&#8221; he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Due to planks being an isometric exercise, they are also a great way to build strength, confirms Brett Durney, co-founder and a personal trainer at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/fitnesslab.fit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/fitnesslab.fit\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">Fitness Lab<\/a>. &#8220;The plank acts as a fantastic strength-building exercise for the core and can be used by beginners all the way through to advanced athletes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Core strength is crucial for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/pilates-spine-twists-every-day\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.marieclaire.co.uk\/life\/health-fitness\/pilates-spine-twists-every-day\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spinal health<\/a>, day-to-day efficient moving and translation into sport\/other workout movements,&#8221; Durney continues. That&#8217;s because a strong and stable core will enable you to be able to perform other movements with ease. &#8220;Whether that&#8217;s in the gym or just day-to-day activities &#8211; think gardening and picking up the kids &#8211; correctly and with great focus\/precision,&#8221; Durney says.<\/p>\n<p>And, to top it all off, the humble plank can be progressed and regressed in multiple ways, making it highly versatile too. &#8220;Due to the above, it&#8217;s a fantastic exercise for home,&#8221; Durney adds.<\/p>\n<p>Do planks really work &#8211; what does the current science say? <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just experts singing their praises for planks. Multiple studies have been done on this bodyweight exercise, with some fascinating results to boot.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers in this <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/354143568_Effectiveness_of_Modified_Plank_vs_Conventional_Plank_on_Core_Muscle_Endurance_and_Stability_in_Recreational_Athletes_A_Quasi-Experimental_study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/354143568_Effectiveness_of_Modified_Plank_vs_Conventional_Plank_on_Core_Muscle_Endurance_and_Stability_in_Recreational_Athletes_A_Quasi-Experimental_study\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">2021 study<\/a> confirmed that planks could &#8220;effectively enhance&#8221; core muscle endurance and dynamic stability.<\/p>\n<p>While this <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3285070\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3285070\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">article<\/a>, published in The Journal of Physiology, found that time under tension (TUT) exercises (like planking) are important in optimising muscle growth.<\/p>\n<p>Fan of side planks? A study published in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.7453\/gahmj.2013.064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.7453\/gahmj.2013.064\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">Global Advances in Health and <\/a><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.7453\/gahmj.2013.064\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.7453\/gahmj.2013.064\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Medicine <\/a>journal established that holding this variation of the plank pose could help reduce spinal curvature in scoliosis patients.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not just physical benefits that planks have to offer. This 2023 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10766451\/#abstract1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10766451\/#abstract1\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">study<\/a> confirms that performing planks can &#8220;enhance the function of immunocytes&#8221; (AKA the white blood cells that play a crucial role in protecting the body from disease), while also improving respiratory capacity and physical fitness in older adults.<\/p>\n<p>How long should I plank for? Planking for beginners <\/p>\n<p>The answer we all want to know!<\/p>\n<p>Well, PT Betts recommends beginners should start with fifteen to 30 second plank holds three or four times a week, with at least one day of rest in between sessions. You should focus entirely on your form.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuality trumps duration every time,\u201d he says. \u201cIf your hips start sagging or hiking up, end the set immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You could then progress by adding five to ten seconds each week rather than jumping to longer holds to allow your muscles and nervous system to adapt properly. \u201cMost beginners can reach 60-second holds within 6-8 weeks following this approach,&#8221; Betts adds.<\/p>\n<p>Planking for intermediates <\/p>\n<p>For intermediates, the aim is to hold a standard plank for 60 to 90 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Betts says that when you can do this, you should shift the focus from duration to progression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than extending plank hold times indefinitely, introduce variations like single arm planks, plank to push-ups or weighted planks,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Again, complete three to four sessions a week, but focus on movement quality and exercise variation over pure hold time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA 45-second single-arm plank challenges your core more than a two-minute standard plank,\u201d he highlights.<\/p>\n<p>Planking for the advanced<\/p>\n<p>Those who consider themselves to be advanced should rarely do standard planks for time. \u201cInstead, use planks as skill practice or warm-up movements before more challenging exercises,&#8221; Betts recommends.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;30-60 second holds with perfect form serve this purpose,&#8221; Betts tells Marie Claire UK. &#8220;Focus on single limb variations, unstable surface planks, or weighted planks that challenge stability in multiple planes,&#8221; the expert adds.<\/p>\n<p>Frequency-wise, you can increase your planks to four to five times a week. &#8220;That&#8217;s because advanced trainees use planks as movement preparation rather than primary strength builders,&#8221; Betts confirms.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udcccPlank Form Correction \u2714\ufe0f vs. \u2716\ufe0f &#8211; YouTube<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753128977_270_maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udcccPlank Form Correction \u2714\ufe0f vs. \u2716\ufe0f - YouTube\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"watch-on-youtube-j6WVxGJZv5Y\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/j6WVxGJZv5Y\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/j6WVxGJZv5Y\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Watch On <\/a><br \/>\nThe conclusion<\/p>\n<p>Of course, while the benefits of planking are tenfold, it\u2019s important to note that even if you decide to plank every single day, you won\u2019t be hitting your daily movement requirements.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/physical-activity-guidelines-for-adults-aged-19-to-64\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/physical-activity-guidelines-for-adults-aged-19-to-64\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">NHS recommends<\/a> adults should complete at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week, which is spread evenly over four to five days a week.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, if you intend to plank, it&#8217;s best to include them as part of your wider workout.
