Downton Abbey is a group of people even more than it is a very large, probably somewhat drafty, house<\/a>. There are the Crawleys\u2014 Lord and Lady Grantham and their three daughters, Mary, Edith, and the late Sybil\u2014and the rest of the household: Mr. Carson, Mr. Bates, Anna Bates, Mrs. Hughs, and everyone else who keeps the place running with gruff charm. Since its 2010 premiere, as characters have grown older and learned to adapt with the times (often by force more than desire), the staff and residents of Downton become like family to fans around the world. Their story comes to a (supposed) close with Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, out in theaters on September 12<\/a>, but it won\u2019t be the last we see of our favorite Downton stars. What, precisely, is next for all of our favorite cast members<\/a>? Find a full rundown below.<\/p>\n

Michelle Dockery has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Lady Mary.<\/p>\n

Though Lady Mary may be best known for her clipped, upper-class English accent, Dockery<\/a> has mastered a number of voices (she had a memorable turn as an American in the mini series Good Behavior <\/a>and an Essex one in the Guy Ritchie film The Gentlemen). Next, she\u2019ll star in The Queen of Fashion as the former editor in chief of British Vogue, Alexandra Shulman; the upcoming biopic will trace the discoveries and style of editor Isabella Blow who worked for Shulman, and who died in 2007. Filming wrapped in August 2025, but no release date has been set. Since the previous Downton Abbey movie, Dockery also married Jasper Waller-Bridge (the brother of writer and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge), and she\u2019s expecting her first child.<\/p>\n

Hugh Bonnevill has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Lord Grantham.<\/p>\n

Bonneville<\/a> will be back estate-side soon enough, as he dons his tweeds to take part in the second season of Guy Ritchie\u2019s Netflix series, The Gentlemen (starring Theo James, who played diplomat Kemal Pamuk, Lady Mary\u2019s love interest in the first season of Downton Abbey). Netflix has announced that fans can expect season two<\/a> at some point in 2026. He also finished filming the upcoming adaptation of A Christmas Carol, Christmas Karma, where he will play Jacob Marley alongside Eva Longoria. The film has a UK release date of November 14, 2025, though no US date has yet been announced. And, of course, there\u2019s probably another Paddington movie <\/a>to look forward to at some point\u2026<\/p>\n

Elizabeth McGovern has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Lady Grantham.<\/p>\n

McGovern is currently starring as Ava Gardner in Ava: The Secret Conversations<\/a> at New York City Center, through September 14. Next, she\u2019ll be seen in the newest addition to the collection of series based on Anne Rice novelson AMC: Talamasca: The Secret Order, which premieres October 26, 2025. The series follows a covert society that tracks witches, vampires and other ghoulish beings.<\/p>\n

Laura Carmichael has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Lady Edith.<\/p>\n

Carmichael, who plays Edith, the proverbial and literal middle sister of the Grantham family, has not publicly announced any film or television projects beyond The Grand Finale. However, this year she\u2019s been the face of Burberry\u2019s Highgrove collaboration<\/a>, a partnership with King Charles\u2019s Highgrove Estate<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Penelope Wilton has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Isobel Crawley.<\/p>\n

Wilton, who plays Lady Mary\u2019s sensible former mother-in-law Isobel Crawley, later Baroness Merton, currently has a busy working calendar. She\u2019s set to have a role in Fing!, a feature-film adaptation of the 2019 children\u2019s book of the same name by David Williams. Other cast members include Taika Waititi and Mia Wasikowska.<\/p>\n

Jim Carter has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Mr. Carson.<\/p>\n

Last seen in 2023\u2019s Wonka<\/a>, Carter has not publicly announced future new film and television projects. Along with wife Imelda Staunton<\/a>, he shares a daughter, actress Bessie Carter (known for her roles as Nancy Mitford on Outrageous<\/a> and Prudence Featherington on Bridgerton<\/a>). Staunton and her daughter were recently on stage in Mrs. Warren\u2019s Profession at the Barbican Theatre in London. When asked by The Guardian if her husband would come and see the play, Staunton responded, \u201cHe\u2019d rather be in the garden [but] he\u2019d better come see it!\u201d <\/p>\n

Phyllis Logan has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Mrs. Hughes.<\/p>\n

Logan<\/a>, who plays the firm, witty housekeeper Mrs. Hughs, will next be seen in the upcoming BritBox mystery A Taste for Murder, which follows a widowed detective who takes his daughter to visit her grandparents in Capri for the summer. The series, where Logan will play grandmother Elena da Vinale, is expected to premiere at the end of November.<\/p>\n

The loyal and kind Anna Bates, Lady Mary\u2019s confidante, is arguably the core of Downton Abbey. Recently, Froggatt<\/a> starred alongside Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren in Guy Ritchie\u2019s series Mob Land, but she has not announced any future projects beyond The Grand Finale. <\/p>\n

Brendan Coyle has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Mr. Bates.<\/p>\n

Coyle, who plays Lord Grantham\u2019s former army chum turned valet Mr. Bates, has not announced any upcoming projects. Prior to The Grand Finale, he was most recently seen in Netflix\u2019s Toxic Town series, alongside Bridgerton\u2019s Claudia Jessie and The White Lotus\u2019s Aimee Lou Wood, which premiered in February 2025 and followed a group of mothers aiming to uncover the party responsible for the dangerous pollution in their community.<\/p>\n

Robert James Collier has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Thomas Barrow.<\/p>\n

Thomas Barrow, Downton\u2019s sometimes-antagonistic butler had a long and winding road to his happy ending, which he finally found in Downton Abbey: A New Era. At the end of that film, he left his position in the manor to live and work with his partner, actor Guy Dextor (Dominic West). Next up, James-Collier is set to star in a new series based off of the Cooper and Fry series of detective books. While no date has been announced, Mandip Gill of Dr. Who has been confirmed to play Diane Fry to Collier\u2019s Ben Cooper: Fry and Cooper are unlikely partners who, together, solve a series of murders.<\/p>\n

Dominick West has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Guy Dextor.<\/p>\n

An alum of The Wire and The Crown<\/a>, West has had prominent roles in the second and third Downton movies despite not having featured in the series. In the Grand Finale, he\u2019s back as star of stage and screen Guy Dextor. Next up, West is set to partner with Sienna Miller on the HBO series War, a drama set in the London court system.<\/p>\n

Paul Giamatti has played Downton Abbey\u2019s Harold Levinson<\/p>\n

The Billions<\/a> and Holdovers<\/a> star portrayed Cora\u2019s brother, Harold Levinson, in guest appearances throughout the series and has returned for the franchise\u2019s closing chapter. Next, he\u2019s set to star in the upcoming Star Trek spin-off series Starfleet Academy. Following the series, he\u2019s also preparing to reprise his role of Dr. Lawrence Hayes in San Andreas 2, alongside Dwayne Johnson. Finally, he was announced the cast of an as-yet-untitled musical directed by Jesse Eisenberg alongside Julianne Moore, Bernadette Peters, and Havana Rose Liu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Next year, Nivola is set to play Calvin Klein in the upcoming American Love Story series documenting the relationship between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, who worked for Calvin Klein in the 1990s.<\/p>\n

Sister of Natasha Richardson and daughter of screen legend Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson makes her Downton debut as Lady Petersfield, a snobbish aristocrat who kicks Lady Mary out of the annual Petersfield Ball. Though Richardson hasn\u2019t announced any future projects, she\u2019s expected to reprise her role as Lady Sabrina in the next season of The Gentlemen on Netflix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Julian Fellowes is the creator of Downton Abbey.<\/p>\n

And the Downton mastermind and creator? He\u2019ll be back working on The Gilded Age, as it returns for season four<\/a>. But will this finally be the season we\u2019ll see a crossover<\/a>? Only time will tell. Beyond that, he\u2019s written a screenplay for an upcoming big-screen adaptation of The Wind in the Willows.<\/p>\n
