{"id":13790,"date":"2025-07-21T20:44:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T20:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/13790\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T20:44:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T20:44:10","slug":"meta-snubs-the-eus-voluntary-ai-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/13790\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta snubs the EU\u2019s voluntary AI guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Meta says it won\u2019t sign the European Union\u2019s artificial intelligence code of practice agreement, warning that \u201cEurope is heading down the wrong path on AI.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_1787\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">code published by the EU on July 10th<\/a> is a voluntary set of guidelines to help companies follow the AI Act\u2019s rules around general-purpose AI before they come into effect in a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cWe have carefully reviewed the European Commission\u2019s Code of Practice for general-purpose AI (GPAI) models and Meta won\u2019t be signing it,\u201d Meta\u2019s global affairs chief, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/joel-kaplan-63905618_europe-is-heading-down-the-wrong-path-on-activity-7351928745668055042-XuF7\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joel Kaplan, said via a statement on LinkedIn<\/a>. \u201cThis Code introduces a number of legal uncertainties for model developers, as well as measures which go far beyond the scope of the AI Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">While the code of practice itself isn\u2019t legally enforced, the EU says that general-purpose AI model providers who sign it will benefit from a \u201creduced administrative burden and increased legal certainty,\u201d compared to providers that may otherwise be subject to more regulatory scrutiny. <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/global-affairs\/eu-code-of-practice\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI announced<\/a> its intention to sign the agreement on July 11th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">This comes ahead of AI Act rules <a href=\"https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/article\/53\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coming into force on August 2nd<\/a> that require general-purpose AI providers to be transparent about training and security risks for their models, and abide by EU and national copyright laws. The EU can fine companies that violate the AI Act up to seven percent of their annual sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Kaplan says that Meta is concerned that the EU\u2019s landmark AI rulebook will act to throttle frontier model development and deployment in Europe, stunting European companies that comply with the bloc\u2019s regulations.
