{"id":138300,"date":"2025-09-15T06:40:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T06:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/138300\/"},"modified":"2025-09-15T06:40:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T06:40:16","slug":"ex-british-soldier-goes-on-trial-for-bloody-sunday-killings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/138300\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-British soldier goes on trial for Bloody Sunday killings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">LONDON &#8212; Families of the victims and survivors of the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boris-johnson-europe-london-northern-ireland-e110edfdb87838c41b9f032999fa4760\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1972 Bloody Sunday<\/a>, in which British soldiers opened fire and killed 13 unarmed civil rights marchers and injured 15 others in Northern Ireland, have fought for justice for five decades without a single person being held accountable in court. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">That could change after Monday when a <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/f2dc3d660bb24d5dbe5d5ec54dead794\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">former British soldier goes on trial<\/a> on charges of murder in the shooting of two men and the attempted murders of five others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The ex-paratrooper, identified only as a \u201cSoldier F\u201d and concealed from view in court behind blue floor-to-ceiling curtain to protect him from vengeance, is the lone defendant in the deadliest shooting in the three decades of Northern Ireland violence known as \u201cThe Troubles.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Jan. 30, 1972 massacre in Londonderry has come to symbolize the long-running conflict between mainly Catholic supporters of a united Ireland and predominantly Protestant forces that wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom. Tensions have eased since the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/northern-ireland-good-friday-agreement-explained-8165d2fb0d7537401047d5ff9ba1a39e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1998 Good Friday peace accord<\/a>, which created a system for Republican and Unionist parties to share power in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The path to the nonjury trial in Belfast Crown Court has been a torturous journey for families of the victims. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The government initially said soldiers from a parachute regiment opened fire at gunmen and bombers who were attacking them. A formal inquiry cleared the troops of responsibility. A subsequent and lengthier review in 2010 reached a much different conclusion, finding that soldiers had fired at unarmed people who were running away and then lied about it for decades. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Then-Prime Minister David Cameron apologized and said the killings were \u201cunjustified and unjustifiable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The findings cleared the way for the eventual <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/f2dc3d660bb24d5dbe5d5ec54dead794\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prosecution of Soldier F<\/a>, though that, too, has been beset by delays and obstacles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">It took seven years from the time police opened their investigation until prosecutors announced in 2019 that they would only charge Soldier F. They said there wasn&#8217;t enough evidence to charge 16 other former soldiers and two alleged members of the Official Irish Republican Army who were investigated for their roles in the shootings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Two years later, the Public Prosecution Service <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-government-and-politics-fb298411e20e247542f104e76aeeee49\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dropped the case<\/a> because they didn&#8217;t think they could prevail at trial.
