{"id":139644,"date":"2025-09-15T20:41:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T20:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/139644\/"},"modified":"2025-09-15T20:41:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T20:41:11","slug":"glasgow-young-people-on-why-bike-track-is-game-changer-for-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/139644\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow young people on why bike track is &#8216;game-changer&#8217; for community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The Cathkin Braes facility has a starring role in a powerful new short film about the positive impact of cycling across the country.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Elite athlete and filmmaker Aimi Kenyon\u2019s movie Urban Delights coincides with the unveiling of a new interactive map which showcases every pump track in Scotland, in a bid to make it easy for people to discover and enjoy community cycling facilities.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>(Image: Colin Mearns\/Newsquest)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Cathkin Braes track is on the doorstep of Castlemilk Youth Complex (CYC), Scotland\u2019s largest youth-led club which provides a range of services to support young people and families in the area.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Its cycling programmes and bike maintenance workshops, described by the film-makers as a \u201cshining example of community participation in sport\u201d have inspired many to get involved.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Michael Hanrahan, Streetwise coordinator at CYC, said: \u201cThe pump track at Cathkin Braes has been a game-changer for our community.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe\u2019ve seen more young people, and families, getting involved in cycling &#8211; many for the first time.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Young cyclists at the track\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Young cyclists at the track (Image: Colin Mearns\/Newsquest)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The bike group at CYC is largely youth-led, with the young members having full control over what they do and where they go.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Michael explains: \u201cOur group is diverse, with ages ranging from 12 to 21, and we\u2019re proud that the majority of our members are young women.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThis is especially exciting because mountain biking is a male-dominated sport.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>(Image: Colin Mearns\/Newsquest)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He adds: \u201cThe group also has a bike container at the CYC, which serves as a hangout spot. The young people are always coming up with new ideas to improve and expand what we offer.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt\u2019s about more than just riding bikes: it\u2019s about confidence, friendship and creating positive experiences that last.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The young people whizzing around the track at the launch event for Urban Delights agree.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt\u2019s just fun,\u201d says Grace, 17, while Hayley, 15, adds: \u201cIt helps me build up my confidence.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Carly, 15, adds: \u201cIt\u2019s open to everyone, and free, and you can use it whenever you want.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Sketch, 16, and Caitlin, 15, say the track has lots of benefits.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt is fun and I have made many friends from this experience &#8211; #tryit!&#8221; says Sketch.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It takes your mind off things, and it is lots of fun,\u201d says Caitlin.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Valerian, 19, adds: \u201cI love the pump track because it makes me feel free.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Aimi Kenyon\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Aimi Kenyon (Image: Colin Mearns\/Newsquest)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Aimi is a Junior British Champion in downhill mountain biking. Urban Delights is the culmination of Aimi\u2019s journey through the Fresh Cuts programme, supported by Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland (DMBinS), Cut Media and Screen Scotland, which gives emerging filmmakers hands-on training and mentorship.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In the film, Aimi visits pump tracks from the Borders to the Highlands, capturing the stories of riders, community leaders, and young people whose lives have been enriched by these facilities.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Aimi and Michael at the track\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Aimi and Michael at the track (Image: Colin Mearns\/Newsquest)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Aimi said: \u201cMaking Urban Delights has been an absolute joy. I loved travelling across Scotland, visiting pump tracks and hearing first-hand the incredible impact they have on individuals and communities.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe Fresh Cuts programme, and the training from Cut Media and Screen Scotland, has been invaluable &#8211; I\u2019ve learned so much and I\u2019m deeply grateful for the opportunity to tell this story.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The new interactive pump track map, developed by DMBinS, is a free online resource that enables riders, families and community groups to find pump tracks near them.
