Rory McIlroy\u2019s late surge on Sunday saw him climb some 33 places up the leaderboard, but he failed to mount a serious challenge after leaving himself too far back going into the final round.<\/p>\n

His seven under-par final round of 65 saw him finish seven shots behind winner Alex Noren, who won after defeating France’s Adrien Saddier on the first play-off hole after the pair finished on 19 under-par.<\/p>\n

The Masters champion was one of the early starters on Sunday after a disappointing level-par round of 72 on Friday saw him just make the cut.<\/p>\n

However, he came agonisingly close to scoring a career first albatross <\/a>on the par five fourth on the West Course.<\/p>\n

After a perfect drive to the middle of the fairway, McIlroy\u2019s second shot to the 494-yard par five stopped just six inches short of the hole. McIlroy sunk the putt for an eagle and also finished with an eagle on the par five 18th.<\/p>\n

His compatriot Tom McKibbin also finished strongly on Sunday, carding a six under-par closing round of 66 to finish tied 11th.<\/p>\n

McIlroy\u2019s prize money for the event was $103, 275 after finishing in a four-way tie for 20th while McKibbin pocked $160,200.<\/p>\n

Shane Lowry, like McIlroy, struggled to make the cut on Friday and finished the tournament in X place after a round of 71 on Sunday. The Offaly native took home $39,600 for his week\u2019s worth.<\/p>\n
