Your metabolism speeds up, helping you burn more calories at rest. Your heart and lungs become more efficient, and your muscles and bones get stronger.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"001d07fb-cbfd-4fdf-a1b9-3073275c84a7-2\">But there is one unwelcome side-effect most newcomers report: delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). This presents as tight, tender muscles and achy joints.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, DOMS usually eases after a day or two, and the soreness will become less frequent and intense as your body gets used to the exercise you\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n<p>Active recovery, which is light exercise to increase blood flow and oxygen to fatigued muscles, can help speed up the healing process.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not the only thing that will help\u2014<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/justmovejoe\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/justmovejoe\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Joe Williams<\/a>, studio manager at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/f45training.com\/uk\/studio\/oxfordcircus\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/f45training.com\/uk\/studio\/oxfordcircus\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">F45 and FS8 <\/a>in London, says he prefers to keep things simple.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What do I recommend to boost recovery? Hydration, sleep, walking and rest,&#8221; Williams tells Fit&amp;Well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Start your week with achievable workout ideas, health tips and wellbeing advice in your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Here Williams shares his four-point plan to help you feel your best after exercise.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-1-sleep\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>1. Sleep<\/p>\n<p id=\"7499bc6a-0465-45ea-99ca-f48f248adbe1\">Your body repairs and strengthens itself during sleep, making it an essential component of recovery.<\/p>\n<p>But, according to Williams, most people aren\u2019t getting anywhere near enough of it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ideally, you want to get seven to eight hours in per night. Or top up any sleep debt with short naps,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-2-hydrate\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>2. Hydrate<\/p>\n<p id=\"30245645-65a8-4d56-b555-234a4c71bd6a\">Williams knows firsthand what it feels like to be under-hydrated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I&#8217;m not drinking enough water my energy levels dip and the midday energy slump hits. It makes a massive difference,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>He advises that you drink a minimum of two liters a day, not including teas or coffees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing beats being well hydrated and hitting your target of two litres of water per day\u2014nothing,&#8221; Williams insists.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-3-walk\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>3. Walk<\/p>\n<p id=\"4bec80f0-ad5b-409c-8412-2dc749cdac2d\">Light movement encourages circulation of blood to the muscles, which can hurry along the healing process and make you feel less stiff and sore.<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean you should pick up some weights the day after your workout.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d rather you go for a long walk or a 50-minute power walk than double up a heavy workout,&#8221; says Williams.<\/p>\n<p>He warns people often overdo exercise, which in fact hampers the recovery process. That\u2019s why he\u2019s banned his members from doing more than one session a day.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4-rest\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>4. Rest<\/p>\n<p id=\"819080d3-6a03-44f3-a794-5951a6bc8a8c\">Perhaps the most underrated recovery tool of all is downtime.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wish I could give you a nice [recovery] routine but all you need is rest. Proper rest. Rest well,&#8221; says Williams.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether you&#8217;re trying to gain muscle or lose weight, don&#8217;t overtrain. Don&#8217;t underestimate the power of what a one or two-day rest can do for you.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re not going to lose your gains. You&#8217;re not going to gain a ton of weight. But your body will thank you for it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Take a day off\u2014I guarantee you will feel 10 times stronger in your next session after a good-quality break.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Wonderful things happen when you start exercising regularly.
