(Valley News Live) &#8211; The \u201cBenadryl Challenge\u201d is once again making headlines after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waff.com\/2025\/09\/15\/really-scary-teen-nearly-dies-after-benadryl-social-media-challenge\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.waff.com\/2025\/09\/15\/really-scary-teen-nearly-dies-after-benadryl-social-media-challenge\/\">a teen in South Carolina <\/a>took multiple pills so that she could get \u201chigh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Back in 2023, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvlt.tv\/video\/2023\/04\/18\/watch-doctor-warns-parents-after-ohio-boy-dies-participating-tiktok-challenge\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wvlt.tv\/video\/2023\/04\/18\/watch-doctor-warns-parents-after-ohio-boy-dies-participating-tiktok-challenge\/\">13-year-old boy died <\/a>from doing the challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Those with Sanford Children\u2019s in Fargo want parents to know about the potential dangers of over-the-counter medications and what their kids are watching on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWhen it comes to online stuff for kids, it\u2019s all about open conversations with a child,\u201d said Steven Steinbrueck, Community Life Educator, Sanford Children\u2019s. \u201cJust because it\u2019s over-the-counter doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t get sick from it, doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t overdose from it. There are plenty of OTC medications that you can get sick from very easily. Especially with doses being different for every person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">With medications such as Benadryl being easily available for anyone, officials want parents to really pay attention to what is going on in their children\u2019s lives and talk to them early on in their lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe earlier the better, and to know that a lot of these trends are for people trying to create engagement and trying to be famous online, rather than trying to do anything to the benefit of these kids,\u201d Steinbrueck said. \u201cSpreading a trend like trying to overdose on a medication is more for the person trying to get likes rather than doing anything constructive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/aapnews\/news\/6210\/Benadryl-Challenge-What-pediatricians-need-to-know?autologincheck=redirected\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/aapnews\/news\/6210\/Benadryl-Challenge-What-pediatricians-need-to-know?autologincheck=redirected\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a>, around 300 milligrams or more is close to or exceeds diphenhydramine\u2019s (Benadryl) toxic dose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">Back in 2020, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-warns-about-serious-problems-high-doses-allergy-medicine-diphenhydramine-benadryl\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-warns-about-serious-problems-high-doses-allergy-medicine-diphenhydramine-benadryl\">FDA put out a warning<\/a> that taking too much Benadryl can lead to serious heart problems, seizures, coma, or even death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2025 KVLY.
