{"id":141739,"date":"2025-09-16T18:43:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T18:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/141739\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T18:43:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T18:43:16","slug":"cumberland-child-mental-health-figures-revealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/141739\/","title":{"rendered":"Cumberland child mental health figures revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>  Child mental health figures in-focus<\/p>\n<p>\n  A Freedom of Information Request by The\u00a0News &amp; Star has revealed that\u00a020,126 referrals were made to\u00a0Cumbria, Northumberland,\u00a0Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW)\u00a0for children and young people,\u00a0between March 2024 and March 2025.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The age group with the highest number of referrals was\u00a010 to 15 year-olds with\u00a010,724.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  CNTW received\u00a02820 referrals from 16 to 17 years-olds, the age group with the second highest number of referrals.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsandstar.co.uk\/news\/25444849.energy-drink-sales-children-banned-government\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">READ MORE: Energy drinks sale to children could be banned by Government<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  CNTW delivers mental health, neurodiversity and neuro-rehabilitation services in the area and manages The Carlton Clinic in Carlisle.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The most common referral pathway for\u00a010-15 year olds was mental health, followed closely by neurodiversity.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Data from Cumbria Community Foundation shows that, in 2024, Cumberland was higher than the England average for mental health related hospital admissions involving children.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The rate of admissions per capita in Cumberland was 115.89, compared to the England average of 83.76.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Mental health related hospital admissions for children aged 0-17\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Mental health related hospital admissions for children aged 0-17 (Image: Cumbria Community Foundation) Lindsay Spencer, Associate Nurse Director at CNTW\u00a0said: &#8220;We haven\u2019t seen specific issues affecting 10\u201315-year-olds in referrals. However, we recognise that social media, gaming, and increased awareness of mental health may influence how young people seek support.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsandstar.co.uk\/news\/25441796.baton-hope-carried-cumbrian-nhs-staff\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">READ MORE: Baton of Hope to be carried by Cumbrian NHS staff<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Referrals to our children\u2019s learning disability and ADHD services continue to rise, reflecting the growing national demand for support. Meanwhile, referrals to CAMHS have remained static over the last year.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>  Community mental health support in Cumbria<\/p>\n<p>\n  PAC Therapy, based\u00a0in Carlisle, provides\u00a0free counselling and therapy\u00a0to children and young people.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The charity has been operating for more 40 years but has been led more recently by\u00a0Charity Director,\u00a0Jen Chambers.<img   alt=\"Jen Chambers, Charity Director at PAC Therapy in Carlisle\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Jen Chambers, Charity Director at PAC Therapy in Carlisle (Image: Supplied)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Chambers said services like hers are in\u00a0high\u00a0demand and\u00a0the most common\u00a0factors affecting young people&#8217;s mental health\u00a0change over\u00a0time.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She said: &#8220;There was a period after Covid-19 where it really sky-rocketed.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;At one point, there was a lot of young people not going back to school. We had a lot of young people that wouldn&#8217;t leave the house.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;We&#8217;re getting a lot of referrals coming through that feature self-harm and suicidal ideation.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;We link-in with CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) and that&#8217;s helping all services involved to better manage waiting lists.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;There are positive things happening to enable young people to get to the support that they need.
