Aoife O’Rourke has received a hero\u2019s homecoming in Co Roscommon following her emphatic World Boxing Championship gold in Liverpool.<\/p>\n
The 28-year-old was joined by her sister Lisa, also a word champion, as they were met by a huge crowd at their home boxing club in Castlerea.<\/p>\n
Hundreds greeted the pair, who thanked everyone for their support.<\/p>\n
O\u2019Rourke won all three rounds against Busra Isildar of Turkey, with a 5-0 unanimous decision from the judges.<\/p>\n
It means that she joins her sister, as well as Amy Broadhurst, Michael Conlon, Kellie Harrington, and Katie Taylor as a world gold medalist.<\/p>\n
Ms O’Rourke thanked everyone who turned out.<\/p>\n
When asked about young people take up the sport, she said: “Take the first step, go with the journey and you never know where you’ll end up. So hopefully there\u2019ll be a few more world champions in here too.”<\/p>\n
Lisa said the people of the town “always go above and beyond for us” adding that they are “always there supporting us whether we bring home medals or not and they\u2019ve been there from day one”.<\/p>\n
Castlerea\u2019s coach Paddy Sharkey said the two have won too many titles to name, and that “once they started winning, it was winning all the time”.<\/p>\n
