\n\tEXCLUSIVE: Following the success of Weapons, writer-director Zach Cregger<\/a> is getting the wheels in motion for his next horror thriller. Sources tell Deadline that Paul Walter Hauser<\/a> is set to join Austin Abrams<\/a> in Cregger\u2019s new adaptation of Resident Evil<\/a> for Sony Pictures.<\/p>\n

\n\tCregger is directing the film, which is based on Capcom\u2019s popular horror video games. He also co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten.<\/p>\n

\n\tConstantin Film is producing and co-financing the pic. Constantin\u2019s Robert Kulzer will produce as will Vertigo Entertainment\u2019s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions\u2019 Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. Constantin\u2019s Oliver Berben and Davis Films\u2019 Victor Hadida are executive producing. TriStar Pictures president Nicole Brown is overseeing for Sony.<\/p>\n

\n\tPlot details on this pic are under wraps, but the previous Resident Evil movies were a mix of horror, sci-fi and action and followed the adventures of a heroine who fights zombies and the Umbrella Corporation, the bio-warfare company that let loose the monsters.<\/p>\n

\n\tSony Pictures is releasing the film theatrically on September 18, 2026. Sony distributed all the previous Resident Evil\u00a0films, which have grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing video game-based movie franchises.<\/p>\n

\n\tHauser is best known for starring in Apple TV+\u2019s crime-drama limited series\u00a0Black Bird, for which he received Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards in addition to a SAG Award nomination.\u00a0He has had himself a busy 2025, starring in three films this past summer alone: in The Fantastic Four: First Steps\u00a0as audience favorite Mole Man; in Paramount\u2019s\u00a0Naked Gun\u00a0as Ed Hocken Jr., the straight-man partner to Liam Neeson\u2019s Frank Drebin Jr.; and giving a nuanced and emotional performance playing a military veteran in\u00a0Lionsgate\u2019s modern-day Western\u00a0Americana.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier this year, Hauser starred in IFC Films\u2019\u00a0The Luckiest Man in America, which premiered at TIFF in 2024 to rave reviews for the actor\u2019s performance. Up next, he is in 20th Century\u2019s Bruce Springsteen biopic\u00a0Deliver Me From Nowhere, opposite Jeremy Allen White.\u00a0Hauser recently wrapped production on Amazon MGM Studios\u2019 action comedy\u00a0Balls Up\u00a0as well as Brian Swibel\u2019s comedic thriller\u00a0The Very Best People, and is in development on New Line Cinema\u2019s Chris Farley biopic\u00a0Farley.<\/p>\n
