In a recent discussion, the director revealed that the sequel\u2019s villain will connect to Bruce Wayne\u2019s past, outlined how the story expands on the character beyond the cowl, and addressed speculation about Robin\u2019s possible inclusion.<\/p>\n

Matt Reeves confirmed that The Batman: Part 2 will feature a villain tied directly to Bruce Wayne\u2019s history. He explained, \u201cPicking the right villain that digs into what that does, that sort of goes into his past and his life. That was what drove that discussion. I won\u2019t tell you where we ended up, but we\u2019re super excited about it, and I will say it\u2019s never really been done in a movie before.\u201d Reeves said he and co-writer Mattson Tomlin studied comics and exchanged ideas. They also drew inspiration from films outside Gotham stories to shape the direction.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Reeves emphasized that the sequel will expand Bruce Wayne\u2019s character arc beyond the Batman-focused lens of the first film. He noted, \u201cThe first story is so much about the Batman, and so I always wanted in the movies to make sure that\u2026 we never lose Rob at the center of these stories.\u201d He confirmed Cristin Milioti\u2019s Sofia Falcone will not appear but praised her work in The Penguin.<\/p>\n
Reeves confirmed the film remains a DC Elseworlds project, separate from James Gunn\u2019s DCU. He responded to Gunn\u2019s interest in him directing a DCU project by saying, \u201cWe haven\u2019t talked about anything like that\u2026 I want to play out the stories we began and arrive at the conclusion that I hoped we\u2019d arrived at from the beginning.\u201d <\/p>\n
The team will reportedly begin production on The Batman: Part 2 in spring 2026.
