{"id":148568,"date":"2025-09-20T03:10:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-20T03:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/148568\/"},"modified":"2025-09-20T03:10:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T03:10:07","slug":"portugal-to-recognise-a-palestinian-state-israel-palestine-conflict-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/148568\/","title":{"rendered":"Portugal to recognise a Palestinian state | Israel-Palestine conflict News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Nine other countries, including France and the UK, also plan to recognise Palestinian statehood next week.<\/p>\n<p>Portugal has joined Australia, Canada, France and the United Kingdom in announcing plans to recognise a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Friday, the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the recognition will take place on Sunday, a day before a high-level conference on Palestinian statehood at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that Portugal will recognise the State of Palestine,\u201d the ministry wrote in a statement on its website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Official Declaration of Recognition will take place on Sunday, September 21st, before next week\u2019s High-Level Conference,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>According to Portugal\u2019s Correio da Manha newspaper, the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/5\/18\/portuguese-pms-party-set-to-win-general-election-fall-short-of-majority\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">centre-right<\/a> Prime Minister Luis Montenegro consulted with the president and parliament before finalising the decision.<\/p>\n<p>It marked the end of nearly 15 years of debate in the Western European country\u2019s parliament, Correio da Manha reported, after the proposal was first put forward by the country\u2019s Left Bloc political party in 2011.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3964658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ap_68ce004a58343-1758330954.jpg\" alt=\"People carry a banner with the words &quot;Free Palestine&quot; during a demonstration demanding a cease fire in Gaza and in support of Palestinians, in Lisbon, Sunday, April 7, 2024. (AP Photo\/Armando Franca)\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/>People carry a banner with the words \u2018Free Palestine\u2019 during a demonstration demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and in support of Palestinians, in Lisbon, Portugal, on April 7, 2024 [Armando Franca\/AP Photo]Global outcry<\/p>\n<p>Portugal\u2019s announcement\u00a0comes days after a landmark UN inquiry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/16\/first-head-of-united-nations-body-declares-israels-gaza-war-a-genocide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found<\/a> that Israel\u2019s war on Gaza amounts to a genocide.<\/p>\n<p>At least 65,141 people have been killed and 165,925 wounded since Israel\u2019s onslaught began in October 2023. Many thousands more are believed to be buried under the rubble.<\/p>\n<p>The Portuguese government first announced its intentions on recognising Palestine as a state in July, citing \u201cextremely worrying evolution of the conflict\u201d, as well as the humanitarian crisis and Israel\u2019s repeated threats to annex Palestinian land.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Friday, an adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron said that Andorra, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/8\/11\/australia-to-recognise-palestinian-statehood-new-zealand-may-follow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a>, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta and San Marino plan to recognise the State of Palestine alongside France at the high-level meeting it is co-organising with Saudi Arabia in New York on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/30\/canada-will-recognise-palestinian-state-at-un-general-assembly-carney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/29\/starmer-says-uk-will-soon-recognise-palestine-unless-israel-halts-gaza-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Kingdom<\/a> have also said they intend to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>They will join some 147 countries, representing 75 percent of UN members, that had already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/4\/10\/mapping-which-countries-recognise-palestine-in-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recognised Palestinian statehood<\/a> as of April this year.<\/p>\n<p>Portugal was also among 145 countries which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/19\/un-approves-video-address-by-palestines-abbas-after-us-visa-refusal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">voted on Friday<\/a> to create an option for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to address the UNGA in New York next week by video, after the United States denied him a visa.<\/p>\n<p>Nauru, Palau, Paraguay, as well as Israel and the US, were the five countries that voted no, while six countries abstained.<\/p>\n<p>Israel and the US have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/25\/us-israel-condemn-frances-move-to-recognise-palestinian-state\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strongly criticised<\/a> countries moving to recognise Palestine, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio describing France\u2019s announcement as a \u201creckless decision\u201d that \u201conly serves Hamas propaganda\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/6\/5\/pattern-of-defiance-israel-expands-settlements-in-face-of-western-pressure\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warned last year<\/a> that a new illegal Israeli settlement would be established in the occupied West Bank for every country that recognises Palestine.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Luxembourg considers sanctions<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Luxembourg\u2019s Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel told a parliamentary commission that their country intends to recognise Palestinian statehood at the UNGA.<\/p>\n<p>Bettel also said that he would propose a bill to parliament so that Luxembourg could take further measures, such as sanctions, according to the country\u2019s broadcaster RTL Letzebuerg.<\/p>\n<p>Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, has implored countries to take more measures to end Israel\u2019s war on Gaza, including by imposing sanctions and an arms embargo on Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Under its 1947 plan to partition Palestine, the UNGA said it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/11\/27\/palestine-and-israel-brief-history-maps-and-charts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">would grant 45 percent of the land<\/a> to an Arab state.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the UNGA had just 57 member states, with dozens of countries under colonial rule unable to vote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Nine other countries, including France and the UK, also plan to recognise Palestinian statehood next week.
