{"id":148572,"date":"2025-09-20T03:12:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-20T03:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/148572\/"},"modified":"2025-09-20T03:12:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T03:12:06","slug":"scores-killed-by-rsf-drone-strike-on-mosque-in-besieged-sudanese-city-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/148572\/","title":{"rendered":"Scores killed by RSF drone strike on mosque in besieged Sudanese city | Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A drone strike by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on the besieged Sudanese city of El Fasher has killed 75 people worshipping in a mosque, first responders have said, as the group continued its push to capture the last foothold of Sudan\u2019s army in the Darfur region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The attack, one of the deadliest this year in the city, hit the al-Daraja neighbourhood, where civilians from the famine-hit Abu Shouk displacement camp had fled after it was overrun by fighters .<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe bodies were retrieved from the rubble of the mosque,\u201d said the Emergency Response Room volunteer group. Social media videos show bodies trapped under rubble and debris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">RSF has not commented on the incident. The paramilitary group has been engaged in a raging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2024\/mar\/22\/what-caused-the-civil-war-in-sudan-and-how-has-it-become-one-of-the-worlds-worst-humanitarian-crises\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">civil war with the Sudanese Armed Forces<\/a> since April 2023 but since the army\u2019s capture of the capital, Khartoum, in March, the RSF has been fighting to maintain territorial dominance of Darfur, its stronghold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, is the last remaining capital in the region controlled by the Sudanese army and has been under siege for more than a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/files-profile.medicine.yale.edu\/documents\/840de504-bc2d-49c3-93dc-af9c47409558\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Research from Yale<\/a> University\u2019s Humanitarian Research Lab shows RSF is building an earthen wall around El Fasher to trap people inside.<\/p>\n<p>Before and after satellite images showing damage to a building within the former Unamid compound in El Fasher, sustained between 15 and 18 September. Photograph: Maxar Technologies<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Satellite imagery released by the lab on Thursday showed RSF forces advancing in many areas, including around the Abu Shouk camp and the former peacekeeping base for United Nations-African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (Unamid), now used by anti-RSF joint forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The city and the camp have been under an intensifying assault in recent months, experiencing artillery shelling and drone strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Brutal attacks there killed at least 89 civilians over a 10-day period last month, with the UN high commissioner for human rights (OHCHR) saying some appeared to have been summary executions.<\/p>\n<p>Before and after satellite images of the Abu Shouk IDP camp showing thermal scarring and damage to several structures that took place in recent days. Photograph: Maxar Technologies<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week, at least 13 people were killed in shelling of the city by RSF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/documents\/country-reports\/human-rights-situation-sudan-1-january-30-june-2025\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A new report<\/a> by the OHCHR said at least 3,384 civilians were killed between January and June, mostly in Darfur \u2013 a figure representing nearly 80% of civilian casualties in Sudan last year.<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/uploader\/embed\/2025\/09\/el_fasher_map\/giv-32554Q2RTVhB7QQAv\/\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">El Fasher map <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Most of the killings were caused by artillery shelling and air and drone strikes in densely populated areas, and many deaths happened during the RSF\u2019s offensive on El Fasher as well as the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps in April, the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The UN and rights groups have in the past reported that some killings have been ethnically targeted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">El Fasher is under a communications blackout, making it difficult to verify casualties or coordinate aid. At a briefing on Tuesday on the situation in the city organised by Avaaz, an advocacy group, participants talked of dire and deteriorating conditions in the city due to the assaults.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Fatima, an artist and lecturer who works with displaced communities in North Darfur, said civilians in El Fasher were enduring deliberate shelling, rapid deaths, slow deaths, injuries, starvation, disease, intimidation and other inhumane practices daily. \u201cThis is a real catastrophe,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mohammad Duda, spokesperson of Zamzam camp in North Darfur, said people in El Fasher were \u201cbeing forced to hide in buried shipping containers as makeshift shelters\u201d.
